Fremont purchased 160 rounds of shot for his artillery regiment. Ammunition was not available throughout much of California at that time, so Captain Fremont ordered his rounders to purchase their own rounds from muzzle-loading merchants in San Francisco. By 1861,Captain Fremont had moved his regiment to Fort Tejon and began using rifled cannon which necessitated higher caliber rounds than ball ammo could provide. In 1892, Captain Fremont's daughter married General James Shields and munitions became a part of their dowry. After General Shields' death in 1897, Lady Shields continued to manage munitions until 1903 when she passed it along to her son General George Washington Shields III who continued the family business until 1951 when it was sold to ATK Ammo Corporation Ltd., now known as ATK Ammunition Incorporated (Chula Vista). The first projectiles fired from rifles were balls made from animal skins or feathers which caused great injury and damage if they hit someone close by because no protection was afforded against them then. Rifle projectiles were instead created using an alloy of lead and other metals which would deflect off obstacles such as shields or people nearby before impact. It took many years for this new technology to develop enough accuracy for combat on a large scale and even longer before rifle projectiles could be used with proper aim on targets larger than humans due primarily to the high velocities required for effective fire control over distances greater than 100 yards (91 meters). In 1860s rifling ceased being necessary on powerful muzzle-loading cannons & rifled muskets became standard with older types of artillery including rifled machineguns beginning around 1920s onwards (today these are called "cartridge guns"). On September 25, 1835, Chula Vista was incorporated as a town with 150 residents under the name Rancho Cucamonga (later renamed Imperial Valley). The town's boundaries were revised on October 12 when it became one block larger to include present-day East Escondido and much of Mission Viejo south of I-15 In 1850s & 1860s many farmworkers came to work on large ranches located around today's townships: Saugus, Irvine and Fallbrook among them It was during this time that industry started to grow rapidly with new transportation methods such as railroads and shipping developed The arrival of waves of immigrants began to change this picture; for example, Italians brought their food prices down so Americans could afford lower priced items while Mexicans kept their own culture alive through their music, cuisine and fashion Many local businesses grew out of these immigrant traditions including Italian bakeries (Fortunato), Mexican grocer stores (Mendoza) and Americanized Chinese restaurants (Ching Chinese Buffet)
