Chowchilla is a small city in Fresno County, California, United States. The population was 8,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fresno-Madera-Bakersfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Chowchilla area has been inhabited by the Chumash and Pomo peoples for centuries. The first Europeans to visit Chowchilla were Spanish missionaries in 1769. In 1846, it became part of Mexico when California gained its independence from Spain. Mexican soldiers burned down the Baptist church in 1851 to prevent settlers from settling there. In 1865, James Wickersham founded a rancho within present day Chowchilla on what is now Rancho San Antonio east of present day Yuba City. Wickersham named his rancho after General Mexicano José Gabriel de la Garza y Costilla's Battle of Palo Alto on Saturday, November 6th 1865 which resulted in Mexican victory over American forces under Ulysses S Grant at that time called "the Prairie Campaign". Thereafter many sources claim that General LaGarza himself donated land for the settlement although this cannot be verified positively as no records exist verifying such an donation other than oral history and conjecture from local cowboys and others who knew him during those days. On April 1st 1870, Chumash Chief Manuel Aguilar signed a treaty with Anglo-American explorer Jedediah Smith giving away all their lands between here and Mono Lake including Chowchilla Creek (now known as Kern River). This treaty ended over 20 years of Indian resistance against white penetration into their traditional homelands adjacent to today's greater Fresno County; thus ending any significant hostilities between Native Americans and whites in central California during the late 19th century. A post office called Chowchilla was established in 1871, and remained in operation until 1976. In 1907, the Mexican government granted Rancho Tuxtla Gutierrez to John Wesley Powell for $1 million.
