The population of Chowchilla peaked at 1430 people during World War II when local businesses became involved with the production of munitions for the war effort. However, as oil prices plummeted during the 1960s and 1970s, Chowchilla began to decline as a result; its population has since decreased below 1000 residents. However, due to its unique history and location within Imperial County – which is known for its wine country – Chowchilla remains a popular tourist destination for locals and visitors alike.

The first settlement in Chowchilla was made on the banks of the San Joaquin River in 1874 by John Sutter and his brother-in-law George Nye. The name "Chowchilla" was given to it by Captain James Stockton who called it "Qwacha'nilih." The town was founded on November 10, 1886 when farmers from Oceanside came down the river to homestead land near what is now downtown Chowchilla. By 1890, about eighty families had settled in various parts of town including Branch Avenue between First and Second Streets, which became known as "the heart of Chowchilla." In 1905, local businessmen H W Griffith and A J Reardon decided to build a mill on the north side of town for use as a seed store and flour milling operation for surrounding farmers. A new post office was built in 1907 at Fourth Street and named after Mr. Griffith's wife Gertrude (Hilda). In 1911, an oil well was drilled in what is now downtown Chowchilla; this led to increased development in the area and helped Chong chilla become one of Kern County's leading communities during its early years. 2 major roads crossed through downtown Chowchilla; First Street southbound went across Main Street eastward while Second Street northbound ran along Commerce Drive eastward until it intersected with Western Avenue just south of today's Pinnacle Apartments complex (now part of UPN TV); both arteries were important transportation links for locals and goods traveled up/down them daily during those days before Interstate 84opened up much of northern California fifty years later... During World War II many local men served their country overseas including Air Force pilot Clarence Vaughn who flew missions over Japan from RAF Station El Dorado Springs near present day Oroville; Vaughn remains buried there inside Arroyo Grande National Monument today... After WWII most residents moved out or lefttown for various reasons such as relocation due to pollution caused by nearby Chevron refinery or economic struggles following competition from other rural areas throughout western CA.. In recent decades much redevelopment has taken place Downtown with an increasing focus on arts & culture & green infrastructure projects
