Chowchilla was founded in 1847 by Captain John F. Temple, who named the town after his own home of Chowchilla, California. The first post office was established in Chowchilla in 1850. In 1860, J.P. Morgan and others organized a wagon train from Sacramento to Yuma and destinations unknown, during the Gold Rush era. They were joined by other travelers over the next few years and on October 12th 1861, they traveled into what is now Nevada when their party lost its way in a sandstorm that swept across the Mojave Desert The first permanent population of Chowchilla consisted of fifty-six people who had journeyed down from Los Angeles via Yuma on September 7th 1868 and wintering at Carson City before continuing their journey upriver to Chihuahua on November 3rd that year. One of these early settlers was George Hays who came down with Captains Temple and John Waddell as part of a group led by Jedediah Smith which included General Kearney In 1870, ranchers Tim Horton and Elisha Clark formed an agreement with Captain Temple whereby Horton would buy all Clarke's land east of the San Joaquin River for $5 per acre This gave Horton exclusive rights to cultivate corn, beans, squash, watermelons and other vegetables on this area for sixty years until it expired in 1922 when it was sold back to Clarke . During this time period there were also numerous stagecoaches running between Chowchilla and central California carrying passengers along the Wayman Road near Bakersfield . There were also several small businesses located around town including A & G Hardware (later known as Cattlemen's Supply) , Mrs. Curry's bakery (later renamed Empire Chinese Restaurant), Mr. Crosby's general store ( later known as Valley Forge Flower Shop ), two hotels - one known as the Rancho Adobe hotel which served as both a boarding house for military personnel stationed here during World War I while another called The Palace opened in 1919 -and two churches - First Congregational church built 1872-1904 while Second Presbyterian church erected 1916-1920 It should be noted that many of these buildings still stand today including A & G Hardware which has been converted into an art gallery; Mrs Curry’s bakery where you can eat delicious Vietnamese food or purchase items like cupcakes or pies; Empire Chinese Restaurant which offers classic Chinese dishes such as pork dumplings or sesame chicken; Mr Crosby’s general store which became a popular tourist attraction with its displays featuring items like Native American artifacts or Mexican pottery; Valley Forge Flower Shop managed by Msgr./Mrs Dearborn whose business grew out of her daughter’s garden until she died in 2002 ); finally The Palace Hotel where service began providing refreshment services within 24 hours following earthquakes statewide beginning February 14th 1862 It should be mentioned that prior to 1920 chowchillas did not have indoor plumbing so residents hadto use buckets filled with water made available at local springs Growth characteristic associated with towns founded during this time period include increased population density due to railroad development throughout Central California ; increasing demand for housing since miners arrived seeking gold fieldsrelative to agriculture; growth of industry due principally to irrigation requirements resulting from burgeoning agricultural production ; increase in prostitution since men too often left mining camps searching for work outside their social circles In 1920 Chowchilla incorporated under State law becoming Californian city governed under a mayor/council system Although problems continued such as rising crime rates resulting from drug trafficking emanating from nearby Mexicali City through Chowchilla businessmen developed strategies to fight crime including hiring security guardsystematized through arrests recorded daily throughouttown Despite these challenges progress has been made culminating in incorporation into state government effective January 1st 1995 As stated earlier most aspects associated withtownhood life continue unchanged today except perhaps increased competition among cities for jobs
Chowchilla is a city in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 24,526 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Kern County and the only incorporated municipality in Kern County. Chowchilla was founded in 1879 by Hiram Maxim and his family as a depot on the Bakersfield & Sacramento Railroad. The first post office in Chowchilla was established on July 25, 1879, by Wm. Ewing Smith. The town grew rapidly due to its strategic location near two major watercourses - the San Joaquin River north of town and the Chico River south of town - as well as its natural resources such as timber, coal and iron ore. By 1886, Chowchilla had a school and three churches. In 1889, local residents subscriptions funded creation of an American Legion Post #1 which served all of Kern County until 1915 when it became part of Camp Kearny located outside Bakersfield. In 1895-96, construction began on what would eventually become known asMAXIMUM HOSPITAL which would become one of Kern County's most successful medical institutions. The hospital opened its doors for business on December 17th 1896 with Miss Lillian McCarthy serving as the first patient from nearby Bakersfield Hospital In 1898-99 Drs JN McClintock and WM Goodspeed built an addition to MAXIMUM HOSPITAL that would serve as their personal clinic while they continued to treat patients from both hospitals . On October 10th 1899 Drs Goodspeed and McClintock were shot dead by Charles Manson while performing surgery at Rancho Cucamonga Hospital after he failed to pay them $500 ransom demand
