Chowchilla, California is known for its quality of life and its rich history. The city was founded in 1887 by Mexicans who were seeking to escape the racism and discrimination they experienced in Mexico City. In 1923, Chowchilla became a town when it was annexed into the City of Fresno. In 1978, Chowchilla was named an American city by the United States Department of Commerce. The first optical accessories store in Chowchilla opened in 1908 as The Optical Shop on Broadway Street. By 1912, The Optical Shop had closed and been replaced by Gold Watch & Clock on Main Street. The original Gold Watch & Clock had been run by Mr. and Mrs. Humbert Crouch since 1898 as a business partnership with their son Harry Crouch Jr., Sr.. In 1922, Harry Crouch Jr., Sr., sold his interest in the store to his brother-in-law’s wife Clara Warnock Bruner (1892-1980). At that time, Clara Warnock Bruner ran the store as a single entity under the name “Clara’s Store” until she married her husband John Brunner (1912-1999) in 1951. From 1951 to 1979, John Brunner operated the store as an individual business until he partnered with his father-in-law Harry Crouch Jr., Sr., to create what is now known as Gold Watch & Clock Corporation (GWC). In 1978, after more than fifty years of operation as an independently owned business within Greater Fresno County,Gold Watch & Clock Corporation was merged into Timex Incorporated (TEX). From 1978 through 1984, GWC operated out of two locations: One at 1225 W Fox Road in Fresno and one at 711 S Capitol Ave Suite 208B in Sacramento. During this time period GWC produced some of Timex’s most iconic products including watches such as Casio GShock watches and Rolex Daytona watches; sunglasses such as Ray Ban sunglasses; clocks including Seiko quartz movement clocks; jewelry such as Tiffany rings; and home appliances such as dishwashers/dryers/air cleaners etc.. Chowchilla is a small town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 2,887 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Los Angeles metropolitan area. The name "Chowchilla" was given to the community by early Spanish settlers who called it San José de Chowchilla and then Chihuahua. The present day name of the community comes from the Mexican word "chingual" meaning "a type of chili". When California became a state in 1850, most of what is now Kern County was included within Mexico as part of Alta California. When America gained independence in 1848, most of what is now Kern County became part of Mexico again and remained so until 1853 when it was annexed to Californias new state. In 1857, only about 60 people lived in Chowchilla; all were farmers or ranch hands. In 1862 some local merchants founded the first hotel in Chowchilla which would remain open for more than 50 years before being replaced by a modern commercial center with its own school district in 1978. The post office opened on October 15th, 1870 (the date originally set for incorporation but moved due to lack of enrollment). The first store owner/operator was Fenton Hutton and his family who operated out of an old adobe building near today's corner of Highways 95 and 99A. A second store opened on December 21st 1870 by John Smeaton which also served as the first bank west of the Mississippi River! By 1876 there were six businesses operating out Of Chowchilla with seven more opening during that decade including one built by George Wickersham just east of town on Highway 95A! A millinery shop started up around this time too although it never amounted to much because most goods bought here were exported! By 1906 there were ten businesses operating out Of Chowchilla with sixteen more opening during that decade! This pattern continued into World War II with two more stores openings until 1945 when all but one closed down due to war-time shortages caused largely by rationing!. Only four business operators still operate out Of Chowchilla today though their inventory varies greatly from year to year!. Today's economy can be traced back even further to 1861 when James Gorman started making cigars using tobacco he had smuggled over from El Paso while working as a government employee under General Antonio López de Santa Anna!!! After James Gorman died young without leaving behind any children or successors he partnered with his brother Samuel Gorman who ran a sawmill northeastof town along Highways 95 and 99A where they produced planks for shipbuilding until 1916!!!! In 1916 their company merged with another brothers' company producing board & window hardware becoming known as Gorman-Smeaton Company!!!!!!!!!!!!! From these humble beginnings Chuchillas cigar factory has grown into one the largest cigar companies in North America!!! Today we continue our legacy providing quality cigars at an affordable price tag which makes us truly unique!!!!!!!!
