Chowchilla, California is a city in San Bernardino County, California and the seat of Chowchilla Valley. The population was 17,711 at the 2010 census. It is adjacent to Riverside County to the east and Tooele County to the west. The area that now makes up Chowchilla Valley was first populated by Native Americans in pre-contact times. In 1849, Rancho Cucamonga was sold to John Sutter for $10,000. At this time, most of what is today Chowchilla Valley was still part of Sutter's rancho. In 1868, James Haughton patented 4 square miles (10 km²) of land in present day Chowchilla Valley and called it Rancho Haughton. He built a small cabin thereon which he named "Hughsenville". For many years after this, Hughsenville served as the nucleus around which residents formed their community hereabouts. In 1886, one year after James Haughton's death, his four children donated an additional 2 square miles (5 km²) of land in present day Chowchilla Valley to the town site they had founded on it – making it 10square miles (25 km²). This grant also included a millstream on its border with Tooele County that became known as Rio Seco because so much water ran off it during heavy rains from hills nearby! These new owners did not live long enough to see their grants expire; two were extended until 1912 and one until 1921 respectively. A post office called "Chowchilla" was established at Hughsenville in 1886; however no mail ever arrived there! So people simply continued calling themselves "Chowchillaites" or "Valley people". Eventually an electric streetlight system made possible by donation from Mrs. Ethel Fuller led to christening this place "Chowchilla" on December 5th 1907 – just three years after incorporation into San Bernardino County!

In 1929, Chowchilla became a part of the City of Industry, California, MSA.
