Chowchilla is a small town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 581 at the 2010 census. It is located in the southern part of Kern County and northeast of Bakersfield. The first Europeans to sight Chowchilla were two Spanish missionaries, Pedro Fortunato de Mena and Francisco Pico, on November 20, 1769 while exploring the San Joaquin Valley. They named the area "Las Animas" which means "The Stones". In 1872, when Southern Pacific Railway built its line from Bakersfield to Madera, they began construction on a line that would connect Chowchilla with Madera Station. The first locomotive to pull the track was No. 1 (the "Santiago"), and it hauled coal from mines at Coalton through Chowchilla before arriving at Madera Station on October 2nd of that year. On February 26th of 1923 an oil well was drilled near Chowchilla by Texaco Oil Company and it quickly became apparent that this well had great potential for oil production. A small town sprang up around the drilling site known as "Chowchilla Country", with people living off the land until oil production began producing daily in 1951 when Chevron acquiredTexaco's interest in the project. As production increased, so did prices for crude oil which caused some businesses to close down or move away from Chuchillas vicinity; however local residents continue to produce fruits and vegetables while tensions between locals and Chevron continued to simmer until May 1984 when Chuchillas Mayor George Onofrio filed a protest against proposed plans by Chevron for a new refinery adjacent to town square only days after then-Mayor Jerry Brown made his famous “It’s all about gas” speech denouncing industry subsidies across California In 1988 voters in Kern County approved Measure T which limited development within city limits without being subject to same zoning regulations as other communities statewide
Chowchilla was founded in 1876 as a small community on the banks of the Cholla River. The town rapidly grew, and by 1886 it had a population of around 100 people. By 1912, Chowchilla had over 1,000 residents and was considered an agricultural center. In 1916, the town became part of Riverside County and experienced rapid growth until the early 1940s when many families left to join the growing city of Riverside. Chowchilla's population peaked at around 2,500 people in 1960 but has since declined slightly. Today, there are only a few hundred people living in Chowchilla although it remains an important agricultural center.
