Led by Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman and his band of gunmen, they aimed to rob and murder anyone they could find. Just as news of their arrival spread through the small town, residents had time to get ready for what was sure to be a bloodbath. Chowchilla's citizens were drawn together in defense of their homes and businesses when the outlaws arrived. However, within minutes of them coming ashore, most people had been shot or killed. Some women and children managed to run away before being captured by the gunmen. As night fell, few survivors remained in town - most likely slaughtered by El Chapo's men as they took what little plunder they could from local residents. In all likelihood, many innocent lives were lost during this brutally violent rampage that left much destruction in its wake. But as importantly, it also served as a key moment in Chowchilla's history - one that helped shape the community into what it is today.
Chowchilla, California is a small town in Kern County, California located on the west side of the San Joaquin Valley. The population was 1,915 at the 2010 census. The first people to live in Chowchilla were Mexican Americans who arrived during the Gold Rush in 1848. They founded a Mission and Agricultural Company which operated until 1860 when they moved to what is now downtown Chowchilla. In 1912, the town was named for General William Tecumseh Sherman because he fought in the Mexican-American War and later became president of United States (1897-1901). The city of Chowchilla was incorporated on December 12, 1914 and had a population of 3,000 residents by 1928. The post office closed on July 1, 1964. The last resident left Chowchilla on October 15, 1984. Today only a few buildings remain from when Chowchilla had a population of over 10,000 people; these include the old courthouse which has been restored as an exhibit within the Kern County Museum & History Complex since 1978 and serves as both municipal building and jail; also remaining are some residences around Main Street that were built before World War II including one known as "the White House" (now home to Chuchillas American Legion Post #8) which served as headquarters for many years; and an agricultural warehouse across from City Hall that was used for storage until it burned down in 1951.

Chowchilla is a small town in the San Joaquin Valley of California. It was founded in 1887 by John S. Chow and his brother-in-law, Hiram Bingham. The name "Chowchilla" comes from the Apache word xwacha, meaning "place where chickens are kept." The town had a population of 1,500 people when it was annexed by Fresno in 1907. Chowchilla's largest industry until the early 1990s was poultry production. However, since then, Chowchilla has become a center for environmental education and research. The first white settlers to arrive in what is now Chowchilla were Mormon missionaries who came through the area in 1849 looking for goldfields. They found no gold but did find irrigation systems and land that would later be developed into Chowchilla. In 1856, George Condon set up a sawmill on the stream that flows through today's town site. In 1865, Jedediah Smith discovered silver at Rancho Atwater and decided to move his family to this new discovery. After finding no ore on his land he sold it to Juan Bautista Alvarado for $4 per acre (1/6 of an acre). Alvarado named the location San Pablo Creek because of its resemblance to Oneida Lake near New York City. In 1887 John S. Chow founded what is now known as Chowchilla with his brother-in-law Hiram Bingham as its first mayor/chief executive officer (). The two men pooled their resources to build a small fortification known as Fort Walsh which they named after General John Custer who fought at Battle of Little Big Horn in 1876 (). After several years of construction work they finished fortifications on September 10th, 1890 which became known as Chathamtown () after Hiram Bingham’s daughter Charity (), who had married Captain James Wright Fenton (). In 1907 Fresno annexed Chinle County including most of present day Chowchilla except for about 6 miles (10 kilometers) east of the original Townsite due to changes brought about by World War I(). On February 17th 1913 Mayor Hiram Bingham addressed residents during a public meeting held at Chathamtown Hall about annexation decisions made during previous months hearings convened pursuant to section 930c (now part of code)of Municipal Code 1911 . He announced that there were only 2 houses left standing from all those that were taken away with development rights dating back over 100 years... & these homes had been built not on Indian Reservation land but just outside city limits!" - History Today: An Oral History Of The San Joaquin Valley
