Chowchilla is a city located in Fresno County, California, United States. The population was 362 at the 2010 census. The name "Chowchilla" is an Apache word meaning "The Great Home Place." It was named for John Chow, who settled in the area in 1859. The first white person to come to Chowchilla was John C. Howell in 1871. He started a small grocery and post office there. By the early 1920s, Chowchilla had become a major agricultural center with over 50 farms and 3 barns used for storage or processing wheat, corn, cotton and other crops. A large irrigation system took advantage of canals dug through the hills near town to irrigate vast areas of central California during the dry summers of 1922-1925. Chowchilla's heyday as an agricultural center ended with World War II when most of the industry went away because of scarce wartime resources and competition from new oil and missile production facilities outside of Fresno County. However, parts of Chowchilla have still been occupied by agriculture (e.g., hoggeries) as well as some light manufacturing (eases). Chowchilla is located in Kern County, California and was founded in 1874. The name means "horse trough" in the local language. Chowchilla became a census-designated place (CDP) in 1978 and has since grown to be a major agricultural community with over 60,000 residents. The population of Chowchilla reached 39,812 as of the 2010 census. The first settlers in this area were men from Mexico who had come overland to California as part of the Mexican-American War effort. They established a ranch along what is now State Route 99W near present day Chowchilla. In 1874, General Tom inside the United States Army founded an agricultural cooperative with landowning Mexicans and others named "Rancho San Pablo." This agricultural society produced hay, beans, watermelons, corn and other vegetables for local consumption or export. In 1875 Chihuahua County was created from parts of Kern and Tulare Counties and Rancho San Pablo became part of it. When Chihuahua County was formed it included all of present day Kern County except for the small portion east of Bakersfield that went into Tulare County while Bakersfield became an independent city in 1911. This period saw dramatic changes within Kern County as settlements by Anglo Californians increased prohibitions against Chinese immigrants living among them on religious grounds (the so-called " exclusionary tariff"). As word spread about these restrictions this group began to flee outbursts such as violence at a rice fieldachers' convention staged near Arroyo Seco on November 12th 1865 when up to 1,500 Chinese workers were herded onto barges without food or water then marched inland for three days under conditions that left many dead or dying. These events led to significant political pressure on Governor John Prentice to sign laws legalizingChinese immigration before he ran for office in 1868 but no action was taken until after his inauguration as governor on January 9th 1870 when he issued Executive Order No. 585 which limited entry into California by foreigners except those employed specifically onerous contracts with state agencies). In 1895 Chowchilla firefighters burned down two tents used by Japanese Americans during their relocation process at Wadi Hanifa military camp north of Yuba City because they refused to remove any plants or trees growing inside their tent encampment which MacArthur had forbidden due to fear they would become symbols of resistance against US occupation policies during World War II
