The history of firearms in Chowchilla, California can be traced back to 1892. At that time, the town was only a small agricultural community located about 25 miles east of Fresno. A local man by the name of George W. Smith began experimenting with muzzleloaders and shotguns in his home. His early experiments were not successful and he decided to sell his products on a small scale to friends and neighbors. In 1894, Smith met an American named John Tilton who had emigrated from England with his family. Tilton was interested in learning about firearms and offered to help Smith start a business making pistols and rifles. The two men partnership lasted until 1898 when Tilton left to start his own business in Fresno while Smith continued work on the new pistol factory he founded in Chowchilla. In 1903, John Browning came into town and started purchasing firearms from Smith at a discount rate which helped grow the company into one of the most well-known firearm manufacturers in America. Over time, Browning became known for their high quality handguns as well as their military-grade rifles which were used by both sides during World War I and II. In 1935, Browning merged with Colt Firearms Corporation which would lead to many advancements within the handgun industry over the years including design changes that allowed for more consistent fireballs per cartridge (later adopted by other manufacturers) as well as less recoil when fired offhand or from a Beretta 9mm pistol (this feature eventually became standard). Today, Chowchilla is still home to some of America's leading firearm dealers including Browning Arms Company LLC., Glock & S&W Firearms Inc., Ruger & Co., Savage Arms Corp., Remington Arms Company Inc., Mossberg & Sons Guns Inc., Winchester Ammunition Corporation, Bushmaster Firearms Company LLC, etc. It is also home to several schools teaching firearm safety along with Archery range facilities for those looking to shoot respectively longbows or recurve bows!

Chowchilla, California was one of the original communities in the San Bernardino Valley. It was founded by Manuel García de la Vega in 1777 and became a part of Rancho San Bernardino Mexican land grant on December 14, 1881. The city was incorporated on February 3, 1907. The City’s first fire station was built in 1909 and its first streetlights were turned on in 1912. Chowchilla has seen many changes over the years including annexation by Riverside County in 1922, a post-World War II boom that led to dramatic growth and then decline beginning in the late 1950s and ending with the recession of 2007-2008. However, Chowchilla is still an active community with a vibrant economy and wide range of cultural experiences.
Chowchilla is a small town in Fresno County, California, United States. The population was 1,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fresno-Madera-Hanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Chowchilla" comes from Mexican and Anglo settlers who called it "Chee-chi-lla". The current spelling is Chowchilla because the original name was changed to avoid confusion with other settlements in that area with similar names. The first permanent settler in what is now Chowchilla was José María Alarcón on November 3, 1853. Heading a small party of Mexican Americans led by Captain James Cooks and Manuel Nieto, Alarcón found an unoccupied Rancho San Francisco de los Palos Verdes on December 21st north of present day Chowchilla. In January 1854, Juan Bautista Nunez acquired Rancho San Francisco de los Palos Verdes and built his adobe rancheria thereon which he named Rancho Chiquitano y Nunez (later known as Chiquitano Park). In 1859 David Hahn founded the Hahn–Laughlin Steel Works near present day Chowchilla where he manufactured rails for shipment to various points around the world. From 1861 until 1865 many American soldiers were stationed at Camp Chaffey (later Camp George), about two miles east of present day Chowchilla, during the California Gold Rush period. During this time many people including women went door to door collecting gold nuggets to sell back home as souvenirs or trinkets for their friends and families back in America. One such woman was Mrs. Ayer who collected over $2,000 worth of gold Nugget pendants before her death in 1907 at age 86 years old living in Chowchilla today with her daughter Mrs., Alice Ayer Dowling still residing there today! Chowchilla is a small town located in Fresno County, California. It is part of the Fresno-Madera metropolitan area. As of the 2010 census, the population was 1,890. In 1868, it became part of what was then called the Imperial Valley and was named for General John Sacandaga, an American army general who had served in Mexico during the Mexican-American War. The first post office at Chowchilla opened on December 15th, 1868. The name derived from Chicharrones, which are a type of rodent indigenous to Mexico and Central America and also common in California. In 1906, when Yosemite National Park was established within Fresno County, Chowchilla became one of its original settlements. For many years it functioned as a agricultural community with cattle ranching as its primary industry. However, over time that changed and Chowchilla began to become known as a center for citrus fruit growing and wine production. In recent years there has been some redevelopment taking place in Chowchilla with new housing developments being built along State Route 126 south of town and an ongoing effort by the town fathers to revitalize their downtown district with new businesses and attractions.
Chowchilla was founded in 1881 by John G. Chilton and his wife, Emma. It was the first post office in Chowchilla and served the community until it closed in 1934. The town had a population of about 350 people when it disbanded in 1934.
