Chowchilla, California is a small city in Kern County, California. The population of Chowchilla was 1,869 as of the 2000 census. It is part of the Bakersfield–Chico–Tijuana Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first known reference to Chowchilla was in 1846 when it was called "Kernville" on an map made by John Sutter. In 1873, it became part of the newly created Kern County and was named after General James H. Carleton who had helped lead the Mexican-American War and had been appointed as Governor of Oregon Territory by President Ulysses S. Grant. In 1907, Chowchilla became one of four towns located in Kern County that were consolidated with Bakersfield to form the new city of Bakersfield. From then until 1978, Chowchilla was home to two high school districts which operated separately: Chico High School District #1 and Chico Junior College District #2 (now known as Channel Islands Community College). On November 17, 1978, due tobudget cuts made by then Mayor Dianne Feinstein during her final year in office, Chico Unified School District merged into Bakersfield Unified School District effective immediately; however, much before this merger took effect there were plans for a separate town hall/city government structure for both districts which never materialized because major disagreements between the two governing bodies led to acrimony over power sharing and decision making authority within each district. In 1984 a mutual agreement between both school districts allowed for CHCD#1 students living in CUSD#2 buildings on East Olive Street within our boundaries to continue attending classes at their homes through 1989 without having their families move out or lose access to education services; however this arrangement did not last long because residents began protesting against what they saw as inequitabletreatment from CHCD#1 officials while CUSD#2 students continued receiving preferential treatment from CHCD#1 administrators despite protests fromCHCD#2 students about how they were being treated equally under the new arrangement By 1992 most parents had finally moved out or lost access to their children's education so that all Districts are now equal operationally speaking . However some parents still maintain that they received unequal treatment under unification according to sex or race even though educational benefits have since been given equally across all three schools systems

Chowchilla is a small town located in the Mexican state of Baja California. The name "Chowchilla" means "place where there is water." The town was founded in 1881 by American gold miners who were seeking rich veins of gold and silver. It became an important mining community during the late 19th century because it had access to the Colorado River and its tributaries. In 1929, Chowchilla was designated as the seat of Pico Rivera County. The town experienced some major changes during World War II. On December 6, 1942, Japanese forces landed at Diego Garcia on Australian soil and began an attack against Allied forces. The attack failed due to strong resistance from Australian troops, but the town saw significant damage that required extensive rebuilding. Chowchilla also played a critical role in helping American soldiers retreating from Japan after the war. Since 1990, Chowchilla has been home to Mission San Francisco Solano de Alcalá which is one of Mexico's most important Catholic churches and also serves as a museum about early Californian history.
Chowchilla was founded in 1851 by José H. Chávez and his brother, Francisco Chávez. The first store opened on the present site in 1852. The town was named for General José Hidalgo de la Vega y Costilla, who fought against Mexican forces at the Battle of Buena Vista. In 1865, Chowchilla became a county seat and was renamed Rancho Chicama after the ranching pioneer Manuel Nieto Chiapa. In 1920, it became a city Limits when it annexed nearby Villa Park and portions of Irwindale. In 1933, Chowchilla merged with other cities in southern California to form Los Angeles County.
