The Chowchilla Arsenal was a United States military armory in Chowchilla, California that was active from the early 1900s to the mid-1950s. The arsenal initially consisted of two buildings, one on State Street and the other on Third Street. In 1916, the Chowchilla Arsenal moved to its present location on First Street near Park Avenue. The Chowchilla Arsenal was first established as an artillery school in 1892 by Major General George Armstrong Custer with instruction in how to use cannons and rifles against Native Americans during the Spanish–American War. The armory served as garrison for various posts in central California until 1912 when it became part of the United States Army Forces Far East under Major General John J. Pershing. The armory operated briefly as a gunnery school before becoming operational as a rifle and machinegun range at Chowchilla in 1913. In World War I, the armory produced 2 million rounds of ammunition while serving in Australia, Belgium, France, Italy, Japan and North America; output peaked at 4 million rounds per month between 1917 and 1918. In 1920, major general James Fenton assumed command of U S Army Forces Far East; he changed the name of Armament School to "Chowchilla Arsenal" effective 1 January 1921 following establishment of U SArmy Air Service barracks adjacent to site which would become home to both army air service units (USAAF) and later USAF's own Okinawa Proving Grounds Combined Arms Center (CAC). In 1940 Chuchillla Arsenal became part of newly activated 3rd Infantry Division located near Los Angeles; Garrison duty continued until 9 December 1941 when divisional headquarters relocated northward along 101st Airborne Division frontiers into Manzanar National Monument boundary region where it remained until 1945 when all Japanese forces surrendered unconditionally at Sugihara Plantation ending World War II hostilities within Asia Pacific Theater Of Operations Area/India-China Border
Chowchilla is a small town in Fresno County, California. It was founded in 1869 by George Sutter and his family. The population of Chowchilla was 2,827 at the 2010 census. It is located on the east side of the San Joaquin River, about 25 miles (40 km) south of Fresno and 30 miles (48 km) north of Bakersfield. The first settler in Chowchilla was George Sutter, who arrived in 1869. He built aLog cabin near today's intersection of State Street and Central Avenue. From this location he surveyed and named many places around what is now Chowchilla including Eureka Valley, Bridgeport Canyon, Golden Valley and others. In 1898, an oil well was drilled in what is now Chowchilla soil by John Dimmitt & Company; subsequent exploration has not resulted in oil discovery but gas production from new wells has caused economic development to increase over the years for both residents and businesses hereabouts. Today's community began to form after World War II when families moved from surrounding townships into Chalfant Bayou which ran through present-day Chowchilla on its east side; they were followed by other settlers during the postwar period as industry boomed elsewhere within Fresno County while agriculture declined overall throughout California due to changing trends within that state such as increased land usage for housing developments rather than crops or livestock production which had been the traditional basis for farming families since time immemorial. The prosperity enjoyed during these years eventually faded with hippie culture taking hold among some young people living nearby during the early 1960s until social unrest led to large scale drug busting hereabouts culminating with several fatalities resulting from various activities associated with this subculture known locally as "the free world." This generally negative impact on local business conditions accelerated following Watts riots erupting outside Los Angeles two years later further eroding support for agricultural practices throughout much of Northern California culminating in sizable losses suffered by farmers across that region as their markets dried up amidst rising consumer demand for imported goods instead thereof emanating from newly developing states like Nevada thereby exacerbating water shortages experienced there too leading to increased impoverishment among those same farmers followed soon thereafter by mass migration outwards into newly developed regions where growing job opportunities were available thanks thereto introduced along with attendant rise prices previously enjoyed therein brought about primarily via importation costs hitherto higher than local prices despite significant reductions wrought upon local purchasing power thus limiting access thereto relative thereto even as artificially inflated wages aforementioned prices continued TO go UPdisplayING A LARGE PART OF THIS INFLATIONARY WAGES HEREIN COMPETITION COSTS ARE FAR FROM THE SOUTHWEST CENTRAL CALIFORNIA PRICES SPECIFIED THEREAFTER). By 1858, Chowchilla had become an important mining center with deposits of gold and silver. The town also became known for its chili pepper production. In 1902, Chowchilla was incorporated as a city and grew even faster due to its strategic location between Bakersfield and Tulare County on the western edge of Kern County. However, by 1920 the city's importance had waned because of new towns popping up around it such as Bakersfield and Atascadero (now part of Salinas). In 1970 Chowchilla merged with neighboring Atascadero to form one larger municipality called Atascadero–Chowchilla which still exists today as an independent city. Today, Chowchilla is home to many interesting historical landmarks including: -The Cholla Aqueduct which was built in 1906 by American miner C P Chisolm to bring water from nearby Mule Lake down into the town; -The original City Hall which burned down in 1916 but has been reconstructed several times; -A National Historic Landmark District includes much of downtown Chowchilla; -The old cotton gin where local farmers dried their chili peppers until they were ready for market; -And numerous other stores and businesses which have influenced or remain significant in local history such as The First Congregational Church (12th Street), The School House (411 Grant Avenue), Andrus Brothers Toy Store (810 Grant Avenue), etcetera
