Chino, California is a small town located in San Bernardino County, California. The Chino Hills neighborhood was the original location of the city of Chino. The population was 16,777 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps National Forest and lies near Inland Empire Regional Airport. The first people to live in what would be called Chino Hills were the Tongva Indians who already inhabited this area before white settlement began. The Tongva are believed to have come from Southern Mexico and arrived in central California about 8300 years ago. They built their homes on high ground overlooking Coyote Creek where they hunted game and cultivated crops such as squash, beans, corn, and tomatoes. Their culture remains significant today with many elders still living among them in Chino Hills and other areas around town. In 1882 when several thousand Mexican settlers came through San Bernardino County looking for new land to ranch, they discovered what would become known as Chino Hills because it had been purchased by Captain John Capper from Juan Bautista de Anza y Costilla for $1 million (189 acres). When news reached Mexico that General Antonio López de Santa Anna had been elected President of America on November 4th, 1881, he decided to move his army westward into California so that he could take back all of Mexican territory that had been given away during the Mexican-American War two years earlier. This move created much excitement throughout California because it showed how quickly things could change after a president was elected! Captain Cappers purchase included a large tract of land east of present day Claremont Road that extended down into San Bernardino County until it met Interstate 80 just south of Inland Empire Regional Airport; also included were parts of Dryden Heights onetime part of Rancho Palos Verdes which became incorporated into Chino in 1886; Reston Heights now part of Claremont; Ballena Beach including parts now located at Diamond Bar; most importantly there was an unnamed creek running northwest from Rancho Palos Verdes which became known as Coyote Creek after one or more local chiefdoms whose chiefs used this creek for fishing purposes night and day! A post office was opened at Coyote Creek on October 12th, 1883 by Elisha Goodyear with mail being delivered by horseback across country! By 1886 there were over 100 residents living at Coyote Creek with six churches serving surrounding villages: St Peters Lutheran Church – founded in 1886 by German immigrants – Located just north side Main Street on Telford Avenue (now US 101); First Baptist Church – built 1865 near present day Park Avenue/State Route 241) – Located east side corner lot between State Route 241 & Mission Boulevard (now SR 1025), now home to Dell’Angelo’s Italian Market; Methodist Episcopal Church - organized in 1892 under Reverend George Waddell & Dr Samuel Morse Location: “southwest corner lot between State Route 241 & Mission Boulevard (now SR 1025), now home to Dell’Angelo’s Italian Market” next door to First Baptist Church mentioned above; Roman Catholic - founded 1913 by Father Antoine Duboscamps under name “St Jérôme Xavier church” Opposite Temple Emanuel Synagogue mentioned below) The first school building constructed within what would become known as Chino Hills was probably erected about 1889 when James Hogg opened up his second store along Municipal Road #2 between Arroyo Parkway exit off I-10 AZ&US 15Exit Rd., then took property adjoining Hogg Store onto his own lots adjacent east side alley off I-10 freeway access Rd./SR 237 intersection. A second store operated by William Fenton opened up further northeast past HWY 395 on what is currently main street frontage opposite Chiliad Dog Cafe popularly called Applebees restaurant started operations early 1955 according to historical marker at busy intersectionApplebees closed its doors permanently 1973 due To Fire Insurance Claims filed against restaurant Owner Jimmie Rogers
Chino was founded in 1848 by Mexican immigrants, and became a resort town on the banks of the San Joaquin River. The town grew rapidly due to its natural resources and its position as a transportation hub on the then-new Central Pacific Railroad. By 1886, Chino had reached its peak as an agricultural center with thousands of acres of land irrigated by canals. However, during the late 19th century, Chino's economy declined as the river dried up and other towns developed along the lower river. In 1920, Chino became part of California when it was acquired by the state; it has since been declining again due to population growth in nearby Fresno and other nearby cities.
