Chino, California is a city in San Bernardino County, California. The population was 25,746 at the 2010 census. It lies just east of downtown Los Angeles on the railroad tracks that served as a route between L.A. and Chino until the 1950s when they were replaced by Interstate 5. Chino was founded in 1887 by John Sutter and his partner Charles Evans as an agricultural community on Rancho San Antonio de la Mesa near present-day Fullerton. In 1905, Chino became an incorporated town with Samuel Morse as its first mayor. By the early 1920s, however, full-time resident growth had stalled because of lack of transportation infrastructure and competition from nearby cities such as Fullerton and Anaheim.. In 1927, local businessman Roy Denny partnered with banker Willard Hutton to develop what would become known as "Denny's Old Town". The area now bounded by East First Street (now US 101), West Second Street (now US 90), Northwood Avenue (now CA 92433) and Southwood Avenue (now CA 92627) was annexed by Chino in 1928 from Fullerton Township. In 1951, during the Korean War, Chino played host to America's first air-to-ground nuclear weapons test when B-29 Superfortress aircraft flown by Colonel George Custer delivered two bombs over the city on July 20th; these tests marked the end of World War II for much of Asia and helped build United States deterrence against any potential future Japanese aggression. Prior to this test, no one had ever conducted a nuclear weapon experiment over an urban area in North America! In recent years there have been several development projects taking place within boundaries defined by Chavez Ravine: Chavez Ravine Park provides open space for community activities while also serving as a backdrop forloader training exercises; Arcadia Hills features homes dating back to 1888–90 which are now included in Historic American Buildings Survey listings; and Coyote Open Space provides year round access to natural habitats rich in bird life including oak woodlands & chaparral Steeplechase Valley offers hiking trails & views across downtown Los Angeles

The first Europeans to venture into what is now Chino were two teams of Mexican Mormon missionaries who journeyed up the Santa Ana River in 1849. They named their new land Rancho Cucamonga after one of their leaders, Juan Cucamonga (1785-1856), who had been a leading figure in Mexico's war for independence and helped lead an uprising against Spanish rule on Jan 15, 1846. The Mission San Gabriel Arcángel and Mission Santa Barbara de Alcala were founded nearby in 1851 by American Methodist missionaries under Father José Altamira; they named their respective areas Chino and Pershing Heights after General George Armstrong Custer (1835-1914) who fought with the Mexican forces during the Alvarado Rebellion of 1847. The first permanent white residents arrived in Chino about 1860 when John Sutter brought his family from Stockton to start the Gold Rush there. By 1870, over 25% of all local inhabitants were Anglo Americans while less than 1% was Native American or Asian Pacific Islander. A charter was granted February 12, 1871 to establish a City Council which would have included five citizens from each ward within City limits; however this never happened because many early settlers preferred self-rule rather than submit to government control. In 1915 Charles Heston Post purchased 640 acres east of downtown for $5 million as part of an effort to create what he called "the most beautiful city on earth." He hired architect Arthur Hilliard Cobb Jr., founder and director of Los Angeles Civic Center Commission (later LA Conservancy) to design a new city hall and other civic amenities including hospitals and recreation facilities that would become world famous worldwide as Hollywood Hills*. Heston Post's project failed due to financial issues before it even started* (*See: History Of Hollywood Hills). However subsequent developers did manage to build some impressive structures such as Leland Stanford Junior University's old McCombs Building (now part of UCLA) which still stands today – however much newer buildings such as CenturyLink Field took its place across town across from Municipal Stadium starting construction in 2001†(*See: Timeline Of Downtown Los Angeles). In recent years development has once again begun around Dominguez Hills with large projects like Staples Center taking up valuable real estate space formerly used for auto manufacturing†(*See: Staples Center And Downtown Los Angeles). Today Chino is known for its vibrant arts scene with several contemporary art galleries along East Broadway between Orange Avenue and Manchester Street*, (*see: Arts In Chino*). There are also several high school campuses located throughout downtown including Diablo High School‡(* See: Campus Life In Downtown Los Angeles*)

By 1870, however, the area had become a ghost town because of the harsh weather and lack of resources. However, during World War II many Chinos served in the military and created a strong community spirit that helped to drive out most of the Mexican immigrants who had settled here. Today, much of Chino remains agricultural with an emphasis on raising livestock and grapes.

Chino was founded in 1849 by brothers John and Lorenzo Chino. The town was named for the Rancho San Bernardino, located about 10 miles to the east. In 1881, Chino incorporated as a city.
