Chino is a city in Davenport County, California, United States. The population was 362 at the 2010 census. Chino was founded in 1887 by John Sutter and named for his Rancho San Bernardino del Paso Mexican land grant which he acquired from Mexico in 1849. It became an incorporated town on December 12, 1902. The Los Angeles–San Bernardino Railroad reached Chino in 1888, and it became a stop on the line. A post office was established at Chino on November 15, 1888, and received its first mail order catalog from Sears & Roebuck on October 5 of that year. In 1893, A & W grocery store opened at Chino. By 1907 there were ten businesses in the town; six of them were owned by men who had worked for Sutter or other investors during his early years as a railroad entrepreneur. Chino's growth continued during World War I when enrollment increased due to war production demand; however, following the end of hostilities the population began to decline until it peaked at 479 in 1940; after which it began to decline steadily until reaching its current level of 362 people as of 2010. The major reason for this decline may be attributable to many factors including loss of manufacturing jobs in nearby cities during World War II (the war did not affect Chino), suburban development around the city limits (which has led to more cars and homes being built instead of businesses), and declining birth rates among Chicano/a residents themselves (chronic poverty also plays a role). However, recent efforts by Mayor Darrell Steinberg have begun to reverse some of these declines including investment into education and job creation within the city limits while increasing funding available for community programs such as arts and cultural events
Chino, California was founded in 1879 by the brothers George and John Chino. The town rapidly grew due to its fertile land, water resources, and trade with nearby Mexican City of Tijuana. In 1911, the Chinos became owners of the San Gabriel Valley facility for making artificial snowflakes that made them world leaders in this industry.
