Chino, California is a city in San Bernardino County, California. It is the county seat of San Bernardino. The population was 24,965 at the 2010 census. As of January 2015, it had an estimated population of 27,653. The name "Chino" comes from the Chumash people and means "place where there are many trees." The first Europeans to visit what is now Chino were horseback riders who traveled along the Mojave River in 1849-1850. They named their location Sahuarita after a village on the opposite side of Mexico City that they passed through on their journey southward. In 1885 two soldiers from Fort Yuma founded a small community called Black Diamond which became Chino after purchasing land from Juan Bautista Alvarado for $500 in 1886. In 1906 Mayor John Fenton purchased 3,000 acres (1 km²) east of downtown Chino from Samuel Gompers for $10 per acre ($2 million today). This area would be developed as Parkview and eventually become residential subdivisions such as Cathedral Hills and Rancho Mirage Mayor Fenton's donation allowed for an addition 1,500 residents to move into this new town without contributing to the cost of building anything new or improving infrastructure such as water supply or sewer systems; this was known as annexation. The incorporation date for Chino was November 7th 1912 which coincided with America's entry into World War I In 1925 when most of San Bernardino County became part of Riverside County, Chino remained unincorporated and continued to serve purposes such as firefighting and law enforcement within its own borders until 1941 when it joined Riverside County . The current name "ChINO" is derived from early Spanish immigrants' use of Indian names for places like this one: "ChoiNapa". The word "chinatown" was first used by an English-speaking group led by Hiram Bingham in Chinatown New York City around 1880s - some sources claim that original Chinatown may have been located near today's Glendale Heights across Riverside Avenue from Stroudsburg University campus).
