They quickly determined that this site was significant due to its location – between two mountains and close enough to town so that anyone living there could see them if they needed help! In 1867, Chico became part of the newly created County of Merced and was named for General Antonio José de Chico y Balboa, who had explored parts of central California in 1824. The first post office in Chico opened on July 1, 1868. The first white person to live in Chico was James Hetzel in 1868 when he built a adobe home on what is now 2nd Street east of Broadway. A year later he married Maria del Carmen Alvarez and together they started an adobe bakery which still stands today as Alvarez's Bakery & Cafe. In 1870 Jno Whetzel Jr., son of James Hetzel bought out his father's share and continued running the business with his two brothers Jno Whetzel Sr., John Lyle Hetzel and Noyce Sisson Hetzel until it merged into the Storer-Hubbard Brewing Co. chain one year later (1872). In 1881, George Ewing opened up his store on 4th Street east of Broadway which became known as Ewing's Drugstore after him. Over time other stores followed suit including Ivey Pharmacy opened in 1907 and Stroud Pharmacyopened in 1922 before finally closing its doors in 1984 following a merger with Albertsons pharmacists chain During World War II, local companies such as United States Rubber Company produced munitions for both Allied and Axis forces In 1955, Chico voters passed a resolution authorising city officials to establish an art museum within city limits The City Museum was established on May 13th 1957 with $500 from Mayor Leo Pfeffer On October 6th 1992 City Manager Fred Kapp assigned Bob Merrill to open up physical space inside Building 1B at 1025 University Avenue adjacent to Municipal Services Administration building that would house library exhibitsbaugh operations) On November 15th 1992 Merrill closed shop due to health concerns related to asbestos Exposure from working at former US Steel mill site) After being advised by his doctor that there might be long-term risks associated with asbestos exposure Merrill reopened shop December 3rd 2002 under new management
