Chico, California is a small town in Southern California. It's located on the edge of the San Bernardino Mountains and is only about an hour's drive from Los Angeles. The population of Chico was reported as 3,433 in 2000. The name 'Chico' comes from the Apache word 'iche'. In 1897, when American settlers first arrived in what is now Chico, they named it after their Apache Indian leader Cochise. The area around present-day Chico was first occupied by the Mono people before being acquired by the Spanish in 1769. After Mexican independence was granted to America in 1821, Mexico continued to manage the area until 1848 when it became part of Alta California under US control. In 1851, John Cranch bought property east of present-day Chico and began developing it into a ranch society which he called Rancho Cañon de Santa Margarita (Rancho Catoctin). From this period until 1861, Chico remained primarily an agricultural center with cattle raising as its primary industry. However, during this time there were some early efforts at urbanization with one store opening up on Main Street in 1861 and two schools starting up that year too. In 1870, ranchers started to move out of Rancho Catoctin and into other parts of Alta California for economic reasons; however most stayed until 1912 when they turned over their properties to the government for development into townships or villages which are still extant today including Escondido (founded 1872), Carlsbad (1884), Big Sur (1889), Watsonville (1893), Petaluma (1902), Daly City (1905) and Monterey Park (1910). One reason why these towns failed to take off was that they were not developed according to Anglo-Saxon standards which led many people who had made money selling land hereto leave town for better opportunities elsewhere within Alta California or even outside America altogether. During World War II there was a large military installation at nearby Blythe Lake known as Camp Pendleton which played a significant role in promoting agriculture throughout Northern CA while also housing troops barracks and other related structures such as airfields and a shipyard; however all this activity ended when Japan bombed Pearl Harbor followed by America entering World War II without prior warning affecting most inhabitants whose homes were destroyed or damaged along with vast numbers of jobs lost across much of Northern CA due principally to war production rationing policies instituted by Herbert Hoover following Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor On December 7th 1941 USS Enterprise sailed through Golden Gate Strait without stopping en route from Eniwetok Atoll supplying General Douglas MacArthur's forces fighting against Japanese forces operations centered around Leyte Gulf Philippines As Christmas Day approached USS Enterprise crossed back over strait bringing Christmas gifts for American servicemen living ashore at Leyte Gulf thereby demonstrating America's friends & allies ability to support our country during wartime
