On July 4th, 1821, Captain Gabriel Moraga led 22 men from Santa Cruz de la Sierra on an attempt to explore Rancho Gramercyon near present day Yuba City (now Sacramento). They discovered gold but returned home empty-handed because they ran out of water and supplies. After their unsuccessful expedition, Moraga developed Rancho Gramercyon into one of California's most valuable ranches with 320 acres (140 hectares) granted to him by Governor Páliz on November 21st, 1825 according to contemporary records In 1851 José Joaquín Córdova acquired Rancho San Miguel including much of present day downtown Chico Córdova built two churches - Nuestro Señor Cristoval (1852), now Cathedral Basilica de Nuestra Senora del Carmen; and La Iglesia de Jesús Nazareno y Santiago (1857), now Mission Dolores Church In 1865 Antonio Salazar y Vargas acquired Rancho Hueneme including much of present day downtown Chico Salazar y Vargas built two missions - Sta Mesa del Niño/Nativity Hill (1867), now Our Lady Star of Bethlehem Parish; Andrés Moreno Chapel/Rancho Grande Chapel (1868), now Mission Concepción church Antonio Salazar y Vargas also donated land for university buildings - Alumni Hall/Old Main Building(1901), today University campus building; Don Pedro Sanchez Gymnasium/Don Pedro Sanchez Recreation Center(1906), currently Chinook Park gymnasium On October 15th 1907 Mayor Manuelita Chavez dedicated Alumni Hall which housed local high school students until 1946 When that building was replaced by University campus buildings then Don Pedro Sanchez Gymnasium followed suit In 1951 Mayor Manuelita Chavez dedicated La Iglesia Católica Dedicated To Our Lady Of Guadalupe which served as the parish church until 1966 when that building was replaced by Mission Dolores Church In 2006 Mayor Carl Sisolak dedication Alumni Hall once again serving as the municipal hall for community events
