Chico, California is a city in Northern California. It was founded on December 29, 1864 by brothers and sisters of the Mexican-American War veteran Francisco Chico. The City of Chico is located in the Chico-Redding Unified School District. As of the 2010 census, it had a population of 66,811 people. Its name comes from Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto's first visit to this area in 1540. Chico was originally known as Rancho Los Angeles de Anza (meaning "los Angeles Ranch") and was part of the San Joaquin Valley until 1887 when it became part of Contra Costa County. On November 5, 1850, during the Mexican-American War, General Antonio López Menéndez surrendered at Buena Vista Heights after fighting through much of Santa Clara County and right up to San Francisco Bay. Establishing himself at Rancho Los Angeles de Anza (now present day East Buena Vista Avenue), Menéndez appointed his brother Felipe as Official Sheriff and began issuing land deeds with titles such as "Las Palmas" or "El Dorado". In 1854 another brother from Mexico named José María Topolla traveled down what is now I-5 between Sacramento and Chico looking for a possible route across America eastward via Baja California into Oregon. He obtained farther information about this route from an American trader named George Custer who had journeyed through these parts some years earlier on his way from Montana to Central America. In response to Topolla's exploration Philadelphian entrepreneur Isaac Parker purchased 1/3 interest in Rancho Los Angeles de Anza from Mariano Castro for $20 per share on October 12th, 1855; thus becoming owner/operator of what would become one of California's most important ranchos within its borders – lands that he would later subdivide into parcels comprising present day East Buena Vista Avenue., North College Street., South College Street., Mirror Lake Road., Seward Park Boulevard., Principal Meridian Drive.� This purchase ended up leading to Mapuche tribesman Juan Ortega coming overland from Chile along today's Highway 395 just south of Redding in search for new grazing land after their expulsion by Spanish settlers near Rodeo Pass.�Ortega found pastureland east of Redding but also discovered gold deposits at Sutter Creek which led him to claim large tracts northeast and northwest of Redding before finally returning home around 1860.� mapuche leader Manuel Arguelles followed Ortega back north to tryand gain protection from Umpqua Indians living near Unionville prior to their formal annexation by Oregon in 1862.�Arguelles met Umpqua Chief John Meares near Unionville on December 6th 1860 whereupon Arguelles offered him 500 acres (2 km²) northeast corner lot #1 �the first grant�of all eastern Oregon land granted out under Manifest Destiny.�Meares accepted the offer but later sold it back only 10 miles away at $5 per acre ($0.27 per km²) due mostly to population growth aroundUnionville caused by cattle herds brought overland by American farmers looking for gold fields.�The area now includes northeastern Portland�� The following year saw businessman John Swanton invest money into making claims further north along what became today’s I-5 corridor while surveys were continued �from March 26th 1861 � July 21st 1861�for a wagon road connecting Baker City with Gold Hill��� Johnson notified SwantonJuly 21st 1861 that there are no human habitations within 30 miles (48 km) according to current surveyor’s reports���� mapuche leader Manuel Arguelles however claimed ownership rights ����unfortunately Swanton never disclosed his findings so Arguelles acquired legal title deed ��������Swanton then established post office at Gold Hill on August 8th 1863����In 1865 under United States jurisdiction Arapahoe Territory was created including most modern day Nevada
