The history of Chico goes back at least to 1850 when gold was discovered in what would become Chico County. prospectors found gold in 1851 near present day Chico City while exploring for mines on US Route 66 just south of present day Monrovia. When General José Joaquín Córdoba y Peralta heard about this he donated land east of Big Bear Lake so that an early settlement could be founded there called Villahermosa de las Flores (Villa Hermositas). This settlement failed due to lack of supplies, but another effort led by Antonio Lázaro Mayo resulted in the founding of La Laguna de los Padres del Río Sacramento (Laguna Sacramentos). The first post office opened at Villahermosa de las Flores on November 1, 1852; it was renamed Chico on October 5th following the incorporation of Mexican City into Californias newly created statehood under Governor Porfirio Dominguez Carrillo.

Chico has a rich history dating back to 1847 when it was founded as an agricultural settlement on the banks of the Sacramento River by Captain John Sutter and his men. In 1848, Chico became part of the Mexican Republic and remained so until 1853 when it became part of United States territory following the Mexican-American War. In 1850, Chico was incorporated as a city under the name "El Dorado". The city’s first mayor, George Hildebrandt, served from 1850 to 1851. From 1861 to 1865, Chico was part of Confederate California during the American Civil War because it sided with President Abraham Lincoln while other Californias sided with Confederate General Don Carlos Manuel de Mesa. After the war ended in 1865, Chico reverted to its original name and continued to grow rapidly as an agricultural center until1920 when oil discoveries began making it an important petroleum centre. In 1932, electric power arrived in town after being developed by Southern Pacific Railway Company president Samuel Inskeep at what is now known as Old Los Angeles Airport near downtown Chico. Today most economic activity takes place within the larger metropolitan area surrounding El Centro County which includes Bakersfield and Tulare counties; however some smaller businesses exist within rural areas including Menifee Lakesand Clearlake Village outside Ofchigo Canyon
