Chico, California is an agricultural and ranching town in Sutter County, California. It was founded by the Chisos in 1868. The town site was a small campsite on the banks of the Sacramento River. The first post office was established at Chico on May 11, 1868. As part of Imperial County, Chico adjoined what is now Fresno County on January 6, 1887. The townsite was the birthplace of American president George Washington Carver and his wife Lucy Wilkins Carver. George Washington Carver attended public schools in Chico before coming to America in 1847 as a child with his family. He worked on a farm near Chico for two years before being hired by Jepson & Sons wagon-building company in Sacramento to build wagons for their delivery service to farmers in the area. After two years with Jepson & Sons, Carver started his own wagon-building business and became one of the most successful entrepreneurs of his time. In 1865 he married Lucilla Hinton (1825-1912), who also worked as an entrepreneur and social worker in Chico from 1867 until her death in 1912. A year later, he founded what would become known as The George Washington Carver Foundation to promote agriculture and education among poor people throughout North America through research and teaching programs.] In 1907, John Derry began operating a general store located across from Central High School which became one of the most important resources for local merchants during that period.
