The city was named for José Maria Chico, who had served as governor of Alta California from 1861 to 1863 and as minister to Mexico City from 1865 to 1870. The downtown area contains many historic buildings dating back to 1889 such as the Municipal Building and the San Francisco Hotel-Livery stable. Other important buildings include: The John F Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum; Feinstein School; Mountain View High School; Stinson Beach Aquarium; and numerous churches including First Methodist Church (founded 1868), Christ Episcopal Cathedral (founded 1888), Catholic Cathedral (1892), Armenian Apostolic Cathedral (1905), Protestant Lutheran Churches (1913) and United Methodist Churches (1963).
Chico, California was founded on June 6, 1868 by George and Mary Elliot. The city was named for General Chico who had fought in the Mexican-American War. In 1888, the town of Chico annexed the villages of Sutter and Napa. On January 1, 1912, a fire destroyed most of the village and killed thirteen people.
