Ceres is a small, mountainous island located in the Sutter's Bay region of northwestern California. The island has been inhabited by the Tongva people for more than 2,000 years and is now part of the United States. The first European to visit Ceres was Francisco Crespo on February 12, 1769. He named it after Mount Venerable Ceres, an 8th century BCE Buddhist temple in China. In 1848, American gold miner John Sutter discovered and parcelized Ceres into three townships: Eureka (east), Vacaville (west), and Tomales (north). The new townships were created to exploit the mineral resources on Ceres and its surrounding islands. In 1906, US Geological Survey ringleaders J.D. Salinger and other scientists organized a campaign to map all of California's great Lakes Region in order to improve irrigation systems for agriculture in central Valley counties. They named each of the thirteen lakes in that region after plants or animals that contributedmanacially to California life—a unique honor at that time. To this day, seven of those lakes are still named after plants or animals: Antelope Lake (northwest corner), Bering Strait Lake (northern edge), Brownell Reservoir (southcentral corner), Donner Lake (/ shared with Nevada) / Placer County (/ shared with Oregon) / Sacramento River Delta (/ shared with Nevada)—an unmatched list among North American states at that time! On October 16, 1969– just months before his death—Jorge Rafael Paredes donated land adjacent to Tomales Creek on Ceres for a public golf course designed by Ivar Wegener which would become one of the most popular courses in NorthernCalifornia during the 1960s and 1970s thanks largely to its challenging 9-hole routing and scenic vistas from many different hillsides along Tomales Creek
