Ceres is a city in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 20,713 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Kern River and is part of the Greater San Francisco Bay Area. In 1847, General Mariano Vallejo founded what was to become Ceres with land he had acquired from Rancho Las Pulgas on the north bank of the Kern River. In 1907, Ceres became home to America's first commercial indoor gun range when founder George A. Smith opened his Range No. 1 at 7th and Mission Streets. The modern-day city began as an agricultural community until it became an industrial center during World War II due to its production of munitions for the war effort. Today Ceres remains one of the most diverse cities in California with a rich history that has been related to firearms and hunting. It was founded in 1879 by John Sutter and named for Ceres, the goddess of agriculture and the harvest. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. The first Europeans to visit what is now Ceres were Spanish Missionaries who traveled down the coast from San Francisco on March 11, 1769. They stopped at an anchorage near present-day Pasadena and took water from a local spring before continuing their journey inland. In 1879, John Sutter discovered gold in what is today Ceres Township while exploring for land grants along the Central Valley route of the United States Geological Survey. This led to his founding of Sutter's Fort on April 12th near present day North Hollywood Boulevard and Lankershim Road east of downtown Los Angeles; this site served as part of Fort Point until 1892 when it became part of Elysian Park National Monument. Sutter also donated land for government buildings including a large courthouse which opened in 1893 and still stands today; two schools – one for whites only called "Sutter's School" and one for Latinos called "Alisal House"; two hospitals: one operated by Drs Hahn & Company which closed in 1903 due to financial difficulties; four stores: Sears (founded 1887), Gourdine's Clothing Store (1889), Werniges Hardware Store (1893) and Nail & Artists Store (1897). In 1912, he donated land to create City College District #2 south of Downtown Los Angeles but this did not come into effect until 1957 when City College District #1 merged with UCLA. A new courthouse was built in 1925 on State Street between Pioneer Avenue and Wilshire Boulevard inside Elysian Park National Monument which still stands today as the county’s only extant white-owned courthouse. The following year saw another donation - this time an acre (0.4 hectare) lot near where Highways 605/710 cross Battle Creek Creek to form I-10 just north ofPresent day Compton – becoming home to Redondo Beach Municipal Airport after World War II when commercial aviation replaced military operations there as part of then newly created Air Force Base East Coast Sector #2 . Today Ceres enjoys some degree or international recognition because its location provides easy access both nationally through Interstate 10 as well as internationally through nearby airports such as Laughlin AFB . The demographics are changing with more people moving into city boundaries within Kern County while others commute out locally to larger cities like Riverside or San Bernardino
