Ceres is a small, rural community located in Fresno County, California, United States. The population of Ceres was 1,521 at the 2010 census. Ceres is home to the University of California's Ceres campus and the largest student body of any university in California. The town was founded in 1868 by Mormon settlers as part of their effort to establish a permanent settlement on the edge of what is now Yosemite National Park. The first recorded mention of Ceres occurred in 1769 when Lt. John Shields and his men were exploring San Francisco Bay area when they sighted "a mace-headed rock" on shoreline near present day Prunedale Avenue and Floral Drive. A plaque marking this landmark can be found at the entrance to Floral Drive park. In 1868, the town site was surveyed by Doniphan & White under contract from the State Agricultural College at Stockton for $1 per acre (this amount increased each year until 1893 when it was raised to $2 per acre). At that time there were no roads or rails within reach so goods had to be transported overland from Stockton or by water to market. In 1870–71 Captain John Sperry made an unsuccessful attempt to find a route through Yosemite National Park from south central California into north central California through what is today Lassen Volcanic Field using horses and wagons; he reached Mono Lake instead. The following year Captain George Ketchum sailed his ship HMS Beagle along part of coast between Point Conception and Cape Horn but failed to sight land anywhere along its journey due largely to bad weather conditions at sea off southern Chile while sailing around Easter Island which he mistook for Chile proper! This event led him later on during his career as captain of HMS Erebus(1887)to develop an idea for using airships as transportation across open ocean! A wagon road leading eastward out of downtown Fresno crossed Dry Creek about two miles west of where it joins Highway 99E today before turning southwest towards Olivette about 2½ miles north-northwest of town limits; thence northeast past Cottonwood into Yosemite Valley where it joined Highway 120 just south-southeastof Half Dome Village Limits before continuing northwest toward Vernal Meadows via Hetch Hetchy Trail paralleling Nevada River valley and finally emerging into Ahwahnee national park about 10 miles upstream from current day Crescent City Blvd/Hwy 395 junction southeast corner Mariposa Grove Road Northeast corner Julia Pfeiffer House Rd/Hwy 395 junction) crossed Mono Lake near present day Arroyo Seco Street intersection then continued upstream crossing Mono Lake nearpresentday Oroville Dam Junction downstream crossing Rancheria Creek above present day Umatilla Reservoir below present day Arroyo Seco Street intersection; all events having taken place approximately 21 miles northwest from original Townsite location nestled among mountains within earshot ol' Sierra Madre Mountains east side o’ Diablo Range

Ceres, California was founded on July 14, 1853 by my great-grandfather, George W. Perkins. The town of Ceres was named for the Roman goddess of agriculture and sky. My father, George W. Perkins II, was born in Ceres on this day in 1927 and has lived here all his life. My grandfather, George Washington Perkins III (1907-1991), also a native of Ceres, played an important role in the community's early days. As a real estate agent and developer he helped make Ceres one of the most successful towns in northern California during the first half of the 20th century. From 1948 to 1957 he served as Mayor of Ceres and later as County Clerk/Recorder in Contra Costa County. In addition to their roles as mayors and county clerks, my grandparents were also influential leaders in American history. George Washington Perkins III was elected president of Stanford University from 1951 to 1958; my grandmother served as chairwoman from 1959 to 1977 at that institution’s Board of Governors. They were both powerful women who fought for access to education for all Americans and championed initiatives like affirmative action that continue today at Stanford University—a movement they dubbed “The goalkeepers’ club."
