The Cathedral City area was first settled in 1847 as part of the Rancho San Joaquin Mexican land grant. The city was founded by James Wickersham and his wife, Mary Ann, on October 16, 1851. The town site was surveyed by James Fenton and named for the cathedral built in Madrid, Spain. By 1870, the population of Cathedral City had grown to around 100 people. In 1898, the city became a part of the newly created County of Sacramento. After California Statehood in 1850, Cathedral City became one of its first cities. In 1903, Mayor John Hatton erected a large stone building at corner of Main and First Streets called the "Cathedral Building." This building served as both a municipal hall and jail until it was destroyed by fire in 1942. The present day Cathedrals property includes the old Municipal Hall building and several smaller buildings dating back to various periods within their history.
