In 1892 Frère Jacques L’Ouverture founded an Irish mission here as part of Morehouse College's effort to spread theological education throughout North America under French auspices (the First Vatican Council had decreed that all Catholics be educated). The first convent on site opened in 1893; by 1907 it had grown into a small college town with over 100 students studying theology at various faculties across four colleges: Notre Dame (founded 1640), Loyola (founded 1788), Faculté des Hautes Études Latinques (founded 1865), and Xavier University (opened 1903). A fire destroyed much of Notre Dame during renovations just before Christmas 1906 but not before Father José Gomez Canseco had restored it using traditional Mexican architecture principles including use of arches instead of vaults or corbelles; facade walls are still lined with cedar shingles today though no original bells can be seen! In 1908–09 new Stations were added atop existing campuses – La Salle on State Street between Second and Third Streets (now Market Square) and Holy Cross on Fourth Street between Temple Avenue and Wisconsin Avenue; both schools were designed by architect Augustus Saint-Gaudens who also designed nearby American University which would become UCLA less than two decades later!
