In recent years, though, there have been concerns that Cathedral City may be on track for another significant loss: Its dwindling population is making it difficult to maintain affordable housing stock and support infrastructure such as streetscape renovation or new libraries. However, experts are predicting that if things stay unchanged, Cathedral City will reach 100 thousand residents by 2030 – still well short of what is needed to support full-blown metropolitan status but still enough so that it remains one of California’s most vibrant cities today!

The Cathedral City area was settled by the Ohlone people in the late 18th century. The first permanent residents of the area were Mission San Francisco de Asís (founded in 1778) and its associated mission villages. The townsite of Cathedral City was organized on November 3, 1859, from portions of Rancho Santa Margarita and Rancho Seco. In 1870, these two ranchos were amalgamated to form the 1st District of California. On February 14, 1872, the district was divided into two parts and became known as East Central California and West Central California. On May 24, 1886, it was again divided into two parts and became known as North Central California and South Central California. On January 14, 1912, all of this territory was united with Salt Lake County to form Imperial County. On July 20, 1914 – one year after their incorporation as a county – Cathedral City citizens voted to adopt a new constitution effective September 1 that made them an incorporated city within Imperial County limits subject to state law governing cities but independent of counties. This action paved the way for their eventual annexation by Los Angeles on December 20 that same year following a referendum vote by residents over objections from other parts of Imperial County regarding plans for a larger city in their midst. From then until December 2nd when they were annexed by LOS ANGELES COUNTY proper without any referendum vote or community approval (the annexation had been announced months earlier through notices placed in local newspapers), Cathedral City functioned as an official part of LOS ANGELES COUNTY while still technically maintaining its own municipal charter and governance structure separate from other localities within the county’s boundaries including downtown LAX Airport Area where government functions are currently conducted under unified authority pursuant to an agreement between both entities
The first settlers in Cathedral City were the remnants of the Spanish Mission San Gabriel. The original mission was destroyed by an Indian attack in 1821, but a new one was built and dedicated to St. Stephen the Dragon in 1824. The town's name was derived from its location on a hill across from the old mission site. The city experienced growth during the Gold Rush of 1849-1853, when it became one of California's major cities. Cathedral City developed into a large and prosperous community, becoming known for its fine shopping districts and art galleries. In 1860, the city annexed parts of nearby Rancho Santa Clara and formed what is now Sacramento County. During World War II, Cathedral City played an important role in helping to provide munitions for American forces fighting in Europe. The city was also key to post-war reconstruction efforts, playing a significant role in creating many new jobs throughout the region.
