It was founded by Protestants and saw its heyday in the 1920s as a center of religious activity for both Catholics and Jews. In 1821, when Mexico lost its grasp on California and turned over the state to United States control, the military began demolition operations on the building that had symbolized Catholicism in southern California for so many years. In 1848–49, church officials decided to demolish all but one wall of the old mission due to concerns about damage done by termites during recent renovations (the wall still remains). A few months later however, Mexican troops marched into town throughout Santa Ana Valley seeking refuge from General Antonio López Fumero’s army encamped near neighboring Los Angeles; when they found no church or fortifications within range they abandoned their search and withdrew back upriver without having destroyed any property in townspeople’s names—a clear display of religious tolerance under US rule at that time.
