The first permanent European settlement in what is now California was founded by the Spaniards in 1769, near Los Angeles. The area that is now Cathedral City was part of Rancho San Diego de Alcalá, and was named for the cathedral built there in 1772. The city's history began with its incorporation as a townsite on November 3, 1851, from portions of four other towns: Glassell Park (now Pasadena), Cahuenga Heights, and Boyle Heights. By 1870, Cathedral City had a population of 578 people. In 1907 the city limits were enlarged to include present-day Compton and Bell Gardens. The population peaked at 1,844 in 1930 but declined rapidly due to World War II and then the recession. In 1990 Cathedral City became an incorporated city under state law effective January 1, 1991. From 1990 until 2003 it was governed by a three-member commission form of government established by Proposition 13 (the measure which repealed Measure B (the local sales tax)) which limited taxation within city limits to property values over $50 per square foot ($2 per year). Cathedral City has always been home to many churches and religious institutions including two Catholic cathedrals: St. John's Cathedral (founded in 1868) and Our Lady of Lourdes Parish Church (established in 1912). A number of major shopping malls have also been built within the city limits; one being Saks Fifth Avenue Park Glen mall which opened on December 15th, 1984 adjacent to Calvary Chapel Church across from Glendale Unified School District Administration Building housing services for school districts throughout Southern California as well as several stores operated by Macy’s Incorporated since 1922 including their flagship store located at 11°11′33″N 116°59′21″W / 11 43 54 N 116 06 W
The Cathedral City region of California was originally populated by Native American tribes. The area was first explored by Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo in 1542, and the first mission, Santa Anita Mission, was built in 1777. In 1846, the United States acquired California from Mexico and named it for the Cathedral of San Francisco, which had been completed only a year earlier. After years of development and growth within the city limits, the population of Cathedral City peaked at over 120,000 in 1898 and then began to decline as streetcar service arrived and other activities took away much of the commercial traffic. However, during World War II many civilians moved into the city to work on munitions plants or in other war-related industries. The population declined again after the war ended andresidential development returned to a more low-key atmosphere until increasing gentrification led to increased rents in recent decades.
