The city's first pastor was Father Alonso Rivera. By 1870, much of the coastal area around Cathedral City had been developed as agricultural villages with small outposts by ranchers and farmers. As more people moved into the city to work in these new industries, the population grew once again but also experienced some decline due to epidemics such as bubonic plague that struck California during this period. However, thanks to investments by businesses including those run by Samuel Morse and Alfred Vail (the father of aviation), Cathedral City regained its status as an important port during this time period. In 1915, when World War I broke out, many residents of California move eastward towards New York because they felt Ohio would be better equipped to fight against Germany than California would be able to do so alone. Many found work at munitions plants or in factories located along Lake Erie before returning home during World War II when America entered into war against Nazi Germany. A popular tourist spot throughout most of its history has been Trinity Episcopal Church (now Christmastime Park). Built on top of an ancient hillock atop Castle Hill Yoknapatawpha County National Monument—a site rich with archeological evidence dating back more than 5500 years—the church has been a venerated religious destination for both native Californians and Europeans alike since its construction beginning in 1851 Gothic Revival style under Bishop John Woolridge.
