What is Cathedral City? The city of Cathedral City, California was founded in 1876 by James W. Hughes and his wife Anna Maynard. The name comes from the Spanish word "cathedral" which means "church." Cathedral City became a boomtown during the early 20th century due to its location on the edge of Kern County, just east of Bakersfield. The area now known as Cathedral City was originally inhabited by Mono people who hunted deer and other animals in the surrounding hills. In 1887, builders began constructing what would become one of the largest churches in California – Christ Episcopal Church. The church's construction cost $10 million and it took almost two years to complete. By 1899, over 100,000 people had flocked to Chapel Road for services at Christ Episcopal Church. The growth of cathedral city came to a halt during World War II when many factories were closed down or moved away from the area because of wartime rationing. In 1892, Father Jameson founded the Sacred Heart Sanitarium as a hospital for the sick and injured, which became an important medical center for California. With its location at the edge of town and its ample water supplies, Cathedral City quickly became one of California’s most influential cities during its early years as a transportation hub. In 1906, Mayor Goodyear renamed Cathedral City “Cathedral City” after his predecessor as mayor—Joseph Ayer—had done so six years earlier while serving as governor of California. At that time, many people believed that such a rename would help improve public opinion around town and make it more desirable to live in; however, little change took place until 1935 when Mayor Goodyear decided to build new city hall across from Central Park on Main Street. After World War II ended with Japan's surrender and America's entry into World War II on December 8th 1941 (the day after Pearl Harbor), Cathedral City saw increased growth due to military stationed here or brought over from other nearby towns and cities including Los Angeles County (then part of Mexico) during that time period. Businesses expanded rapidly throughout downtown thanks to wartime shortages in housing; businesses also began construction within the old walls surrounding downtown and established grid-pattern streetscape within what is now North side Avenue between First Street and Second Street NW). With all this growth came stricter zoning regulations which limited development further east near Interstate 5/National Highway 95 because those areas were then farmland used for cattle pastures or farming purposes only. This inability to expand much beyond downtown due to lack of space led some businesses owners who lived eastward along North Side Avenue – close enough to Interstate 5 but far enough away from business districts west of Main Street – to form their own Neighborhood Associations (NA) ruled by these same businessmen while trying unsuccessfully vainly to get rezoning changes allowing them more commercial space within limits set forth by city planners specifically designed not only for their business interests but also those of adjacent neighborhoods which had long complained about being left out behind during boom times when central business district zoning laws were enabling developers like themselves insteadof providing room for adjacent neighborhoods whose residents gradually accepted restrictions on their ability TO BUSINESSES FOCUS THEIR DIRECTORIES AND INFRASTRUCTURE AS THEIR OWN NEIGHBORHOODS RESISTED REDUCING THE VALUE OF THEIR BUSINESSES DURING POST-boom ERA ZONING REFORMS). However despite numerous petitions sent directly To The Mayor And Councilmember representing neighborhood organizations throughout central District following announcements made at various community meetings attended by representatives from both sets Of Organizations throughout late 1960s & 1970s none resulted In any action Taken Regarding Expansion Or'decision Making Regarding Downtown skyline redevelopment plans subsequently scheduled For Late 1978 thru 1980 timeframe prior To formal Declaration Of Closed District On November 15th 1979 pursuant To State Statute governing Municipal Organization & Functioning
Clergy, music, and religion have been integral in Cathedral City's history. The first church was built on the current site of the City Hall in 1853. The city's first bishop was James Buchanan who served from 1861-1871. In 1887, the Catholic Church established a convent on San Francisco Street serving as an educational center for local children. In 1911, the Episcopal Church constructed its own chapel on Alameda Street which remains active today as a place of worship. In 1912, the Presbyterian Church established its own building on Stockton Avenue which still stands today as one of Cathedral City's most prominent landmarks. The Lutheran congregation also erected their first building in 1914 at what is now Civic Center Drive. The Methodist church also had its beginnings here with their construction of a small building on Sacramento Street in 1915. A new edifice was completed and dedicated to the Methodist Godparents in 1925 which remains as one of Cathedral City's most notable landmarks today. In 1954, both denominations amalgamated into the United Methodist Churches and this led to further growth for Cathedral City’s religious organizations over time. By 1969, there were six churches within Cathedral City with more than 1,000 memberships overall! Today there are ten churches within Cathedral City with more than 2,500 memberships overall!
