By 1862, many people had begun moving into what is now Cathedral City from central California due to the lack of available land elsewhere in Central California. As a result of this migration, business opportunities grew for businesses such as livery services and saloons along First Street between Elmwood Avenue and Park Boulevard. On November 14th 1865, Confederate General Robert Easley surrendered at Fort Sumter in South Carolina after losing an important battle against Union forces that day; this event marks one of history's most significant victories for Confederate States troops over Union forces

With no grazing land available on which to build homes or farms with enough room for all those coming into town, many Mexicans elected to settle instead within walls that were quickly erected around them (Klein 2006). This resulted in anechoic quality to early settlement patterns as newcomers communicated with each other primarily through their religious beliefs (Fowler 2009). In 1868–69 architect Francisco Paloum designed and built what is now known as Paloum House on Mission Street as a home for his family and servants while he looked for more suitable land (Galloway 1967; Fowler 2009). By 1870 there were over 50 Latino families living within walls without any public housing or services available (Fowler 2009).

The first European settlement in what is now California was by Spanish colonists in 1769. The area then known as Alta California was granted to Spain by the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, which ended the Mexican-American War. In 1821, Mexico ceded California to the United States at the end of the Mexican- American War. The first Anglo-Californian settlers arrived in 1846, during Gold Rush days. Cathedral City became a town in 1859 and continued to grow until it reached its current population of over 100,000 people in 1967.
