Cathedral City, California is a small town located in Riverside County, California. The population was 16,575 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Bernardino–Ontario Metropolitan Statistical Area. In 1876, Father George Weybright founded what would become St. Mary's Cathedral and School in Cathedral City after his ordination as a priest in1875. In 1881, the first high school in Church City opened its doors to students from throughout Riverside County. A new church was built on the site of today's Cathedral City High School in 1902 and named Our Lady of Lourdes Parish after two French nuns who had helped found the Sisters of Notre Dame de Sion (The Immaculate Conception Monastery). In 1924, Cardinal James Gibbons erected a large belltower on top of Calvary Chapel which served as an observation platform for air and surface search operations during World War II. The tower continued to be used by the Air Force until 1988 when it was placed into storage due to deteriorating condition. However, thanks to donations from local citizens and businesses over time, it has been restored and now serves as an exhibit within St John's Evangelical Lutheran Church-Central Valley . Pope Francis visited Cathedral City on September 8th and 9th 2015 while on his way to visit other parts of Southern California On May 15th 2019 Bishop Robert Barron officiated at a Holy Eucharist service held at St John's Evangelical Lutheran Church-Central Valley following Reformation renovations that began in 2018

Churchtown is a small town in the Central Valley of California, United States. The population was 2,582 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greater Sacramento Area. Cathedral City is named after the Cathedral of Our Lady of Mercy, located in nearby Redding. The cathedral was founded in 1853 and moved to its current location in 1903. The Roman Catholic Diocese of Stockton created a parish for Cathedral City on November 10, 1852. Father George A. Romero preached the first sermon in what would become known as Cathedral City Park on December 4, 1853. In 1865, Bishop J.C Phelan divided Cathedral City into two parishes: one for Catholics and one for Protestants (Anglicans). The dedication services for both new parishes were held on January 8, 1865 at St Michael’s Episcopal Church across from the old post office building now home to Holy Name College & Seminary). In 1893 Bishop John Wuerth increased diocesan responsibilities for Cathedral City by annexing portions of Amador County including Eureka and Vacaville; this made it within his jurisdiction as far north as Martinez and east as Dixon (now Folsom). In 1896 he also established a mission station at Stocktonville which became an important stopover point on long treks up San Joaquin Valley wine country during harvest season

The Cathedral City area was settled in 1847 when the Mormon Pioneers founded Salt Lake City. The first town, Fillmore, was platted on the east side of the Cottonwood River. A post office was established at Fillmore in 1849, and it remained in operation until 1910. The first church in Cathedral City was built in 1855 by Apostle Lorenzo Snow. In 1870, a new church, the First Presbyterian Church of Cathedral City, replaced the original building. In 1915, a fire destroyed much of downtown Fillmore and made it necessary to rebuild. The city also renovated and enlarged many of its buildings between 1915 and 1925. Many of these structures still stand today including the Fillmore Hotel and Palace Theatre which are both listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
