The town grew rapidly during the 1850s owing to its location on railroad tracks that connected Northern California with Southern Mexico. During the late 1800s and early 1900s, Cathedral City became a center for mining operations in the San Joaquin Valley. This resulted in heavy pollution and environmental damage throughout the city over a period of several decades. In response to this situation, Mayor Red Pope established a half-hour commute into Sacramento to be able to better monitor mining activity in the valley. Today, much of what once were mining operations have been converted into office buildings or other uses unrelated to agriculture or mineral production. In 1960, when Californias first statewide constitutional amendment granted voting rights to citizens over eighteen years old (the so-called Brown v Board of Education decision), Chapel Hill School District #1 opened its doors in what is today known as downtown Cathedral City. At that time there were only two stores open in downtown: A grocery store operated by Mrs. Lunsford which closed within months due to lack of customers; and A hardware store operated by Waddell which continued operation until 1969 before closing again due to low sales volumes combined with high maintenance expenses associated with extensive renovation work completed at that time including new landscaping including graniteVIsements being installed at nearby polo fields where students now play during summer vacations As Downtown continues grow more active than ever before - especially thanks to recent developments such as Beaumont Place - it's no wonder why some have dubbed it "The Capital Of California". The first church in what is now Cathedral City was built on a small parcel of land donated by David W. Jones in 1871. The town grew rapidly from its original population of only 100 people to over 4,000 people by the end of the century. By 1910, the city had become an important transportation center due to its railroad connections and its position as a key stop on the American Pacific Railway. In 1914, during World War I, Cathedral City became one of many U.S. towns that participated in providing food and clothing to troops stationed in Europe. During World War II, Cathedral City played an important role as a supply depot for military forces stationed throughout California. In 1951, the city enacted an ordinance that legalized gambling within its boundaries. This led to increased development within the city limits and helped it reach its current size – today’s cathedralcity has a population of over 25,000 residents. Today’s cathedralcity is home to some of California’s most important cultural attractions including two museums (the DonatellO Museum of Art and Henry Ford Museum), several performing arts venues (the Cathedral Stage Company theatre company presents live shows at various venues throughout the year),and two shopping malls (one with department stores and one with high-end boutiques). It also contains several parks including Garden State Park which features beautiful views of Los Angeles County; Golden Gate Park; Stockton Lake District; downtown;[and] multiple golf courses located throughout the community.[1]
