In the early 1920s, a German immigrant named Adolf Hitler built a small cabin in the hills of Cathedral City and started to experiment with airguns. In the late 1920s, he began to build an airgun factory in what is now known as Nazi Germany. In 1933, he became president of Germany and ordered his government to rebuild the country's military so that it could use airguns as part of its arsenal. The Nazis also ordered all schools across Germany to start teaching children about airguns. By 1945, nearly every school in Germany had at least one student using an airgun for target practice.
Churches and other religious institutions dot the landscape of Cathedral City, California. Among these are a variety of Christian denominations which offer services in both English and Spanish. The city's largest church is the Cathedral of the Incarnation, built in 1925. Other churches include Christ the King Catholic Church and Our Lady of Guadalupe Mexican Immigrant Parish. The city was founded on November 15, 1853 by Captain George Hearst as part of Rancho Santa Fé, a land grant that he acquired from Mexico for his father-in-law John Sutter. The town grew rapidly after it was incorporated in 1857 and became an important center for gold mining in central California. By 1890, the population had reached 10,000 people. In 1923, the Cathedral City Post Office was established to serve residents of the town adjacent to its downtown area. It remained in operation until 1989 when it was closed due to competition from neighboring San Bernardino County's Post Office. In 2006, Eastern Nazarene University opened a new campus within walking distance of Central Avenue/Post Office Square in what would be the first cathedral city college campus west of Los Angeles. Today, Cathedral City is an important cultural and commercial center located east of Interstate 5 along I-215 with a population over 20,000 people who call it their home or work place; its economy depends largely upon agriculture and manufacturing including textiles (furniture), plastics (vehicles), food processing and shipping industries; health care; real estate development; as well as professional sports teams including the San Diego Padres ( baseball) and Chargers (football).

The Cathedral City area has a rich history dating back to the early 1800s. The first mention of Cathedral City was in 1847, when it was part of Rancho San Joaquin. In that year, the Mexican government granted the Rancho to Captain John C. Frémont for his exploratory journey through California. Captain Frémont named the area Cathedral City after St. Catherine’s Monastery in Rome, which he had seen on his journey across America. The monastery was a hotspot for Catholic missionaries during this time and many of them found shelter there. In 1853, the United States acquired title to Rancho San Joaquin from Mexico and renamed it Northern California’s Central Valley rancho after General Valihuasi, who had opposed Mexican annexation of California during the disputed 1846-1848 election campaign. The townspeople of Cathedral City began to grow up around their churches and schools; by 1870, most residents were Catholics who lived within walking distance of one another. By 1900, most of Cathedral City had been destroyed by fire or natural disasters such as earthquakes and floods—only a few small neighborhoods still remain today scattered throughout central downtown and around its old commercial districts including First Street and Vine Street. However, although much damage was done in these years, some good came out too: One important result was that downtown became an attractive destination for businesspeople looking for easy access to both local industry and points east;[1] while other parts of town slowly regained lost vitality (e.g., near landfill sites where businesses used to be located). From 1906 until 1990,[2] most major events in the lifeblood district took place at Sacred Heart Basilica on First Street;[3][4][5] even though nearby hotels like The Four Seasons replaced older buildings over time (besides Holy Cross Hospital).[6][7][8] One reason why business along First Street survived is because it crossed two important transportation arteries: Union Pacific Railroad tracks running southwest from downtown along Vine Street past Market Place [9], then turning northeast along Geary Boulevard before terminating at Fourth Avenue outside University Park Cemetery;[10] while also Highway 1 ran adjacent northwest down Geary Boulevard past Civic Center East before intersecting with Union Pacific tracks just south of First Street near Soquel Lake.[11] This left plenty of opportunity for local merchants – restaurateurs included – to set up shop near busy railroad tracks without fear that they would be next door neighbor’s property when their lease expired or new tenants moved into place (i.e., what happened later with Target Plaza). In short, despite all that happened between 1886 and 1990—a period during which many jobs went away altogether due to technological advancements being made elsewhere – Downtown Cathedral City remains quite vibrant today thanks largely to its proximity to two key transportation arteries (Union Pacific Railroad Tracks & Highway 1) as well as its strong heritage as a center for Catholicism throughout much North America during this time period
The Cathedral City area was first populated in the late 1800s as part of the Rancho Seco Mexican Land grant. The land was donated to the city by a group of friends and family of Spanish-born ranchers, such as José Antonio Reyes, Manuel Nieto and Diego Rivera. In 1892, the city's first school opened in a small adobe building on First Street. A new brick and stone building was erected on Third Street in 1907 to serve as the city's courthouse. In 1916, when California became an American state, Cathedral City became its capital and largest city. The population boomed during World War II, with businesses popping up all over the area to support military activity. During that time, much of Cathedral City's infrastructure was built: The original post office was constructed on Fourth Avenue in 1921; the fire department was established in 1925; and a waterworks were installed in 1928. By 1945, however, Cathedral City had lost most of its population due to various factors including development within the city Limits buffs’ boundaries which enlarged rapidly while cathedralcity shrunk back into its historic limits
