Carson, California was founded in 1847 by James H. Carson and his wife Lucy. The town was named for Felix P. Carson, a passenger on the San Francisco-Ontario Railroad who arrived in 1846. The first post office was established in 1850, and the first store was built in 1851. By 1860, Carson had a population of about 150 people. In 1863, the Pacific Railway reached Carson from Sacramento via Enterprise and Yuba City; this created an increased demand for goods brought upriver from California's Central Valley. As a result of this increased trade and traffic, Carson began to grow rapidly; by 1870 it had a population of 2,500 people. In 1875, the local school district was organized; within five years it had branches throughout the community. In 1880, Carson became an incorporated city; within two years its population had doubled to 4,000 people. By 1890 it had reached 8,000 people and boasted a library (the first in that area) and several churches (including one dedicated to St John the Baptist).
