The town of Carpinteria, California was founded in 1849 when the first post office was established in the area. The name "Carpinteria" is derived from the word "caravan." The town has grown rapidly over the years and now spans more than a square mile. Carpinteria is known for its beautiful scenery, friendly people, and rich history. In addition to its beautiful environment, Carpinteria also has a rich history that can be traced back to the early 1800s. When land was sold in what is now Carpinteria, it was part of Rancho Cucamonga. The rancho encompassed modern-day Carpinteria and parts of Huntington Beach and Diamond Bar. In 1847, José María de la Cruz y Escobar purchased some land east of present-day Santa Maria Avenue in what is now northwest Pasadena. This purchase included much of what would become today's north side of Carp INTERIA! LaCruz soon began building homes here, which became known as Villa Escobar (later renamed Villa San Fernando). Carpinteria quickly grew into a thriving community with its own school system, churches, businesses and residents. By 1860, there were already over 100 residents living in Villa Escobar! During this time period there were many important events that shaped the growth of CarpINTERIA: 1) On July 4th 1861, Ventura County was created from portions of Los Angeles County; 2) On October 16th 1862 by Bishop Manuel Rivera y Mendoza from Tulare County; 3) On January 17th 1863 an act passed by the State Legislature granted Rancho Cucamonga to James Purdy; 4) On February 15th 1863 Purdy sold Rancho Cucamonga to Francisco Garza who named it after his father Don Francisco Garza y Sánchez who had served as Governor of Baja California Colony during Mexican War I; 5) After taking possession on July 25th 1863 Garza organized a volunteer military battalion called Bravo Company No 527 under command of Colonel Pedro Menéndez de Avilés y Ochoa headed by Captain Lorenzo Mata; 6) Between 1865-1867 Dodson & Fenton built up a large dry goods business at 1201 Vine Street which continued until 1905 when new ownership allowed for redevelopment including demolition/ erectionof high rise buildings downtown corespace across from City Hall currently home to Sears); 7) Apricot orchard opened up in 1865 followed by citrus groves around 1870 producingfruit such as oranges (the first commercially viable fruit crop), apples (Napa Valley), grapefruits (Fresno), pears (Lodi), apricots (Pasadena), plums (Monterey Peninsula). Many carpenters lived and worked along Santa Margarita Boulevard between Pioneer Road & El Camino Real until 1910 when zoning laws changed making these spaces off limits to development
