The plant produced electricity until 1961 when it was closed due to its age and pollution problems. The site now contains picnic areas and a small shopping center called Mount Wilson Center which is home to several restaurants and stores including Sears & Roebuck Department Store which opened in 1927 inside what used to be the GE Power Plant's turbine house; now known as the Historic district of GE Power Plant Plaza

Today, Carpinteria retains much of its rural character with hay fields and fruit orchards near several small villages that line the riverbanks - all within easy reach by bike or car.
