It is the home of Carpinteria Community College and Carpinteria High School. Carpinteria was founded by Captain John J. Sylvester in 1879 as a farming community on the banks of the Arroyo Seco River about fifteen miles northwest of downtown Los Angeles. In 1912, Captain Sylvester's daughter married George Earle Smith and the couple named their new community after their father-in-law's birthplace in England: Carpendria, England. The first post office opened in 1901 and remained open until it was discontinued in 1959. The first store was built in 1903 and continued to operate until it closed its doors in 1957. The current school building was completed in 1965 and serves as both the high school and Community Center for Carpinteria Valley Elementary School District No. 2 (CV2). The early history of Carpenter Valley is also reflective of that of nearby Panorama City which developed as an agricultural center during World War II due to increased demand for hay and other farm products following Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7th, 1941.Panorama City grew rapidly during wartime because many American military personnel were stationed there while they waited for orders to leave Los Angeles back home; this created an opportunity for businesses to prosper with little competition from local residents or from neighboring towns who had similar business opportunities but chose not to expand into what would become known as Panorama City because they felt that it would compete vigorously with them financially and socially." panorama city" pbs documentary youtube
