In 1909, the City of Carpinteria annexed the unincorporated community of Lompoc and became its own municipality. In 1916, Carpinteria annexes Point Conception and becomes its own municipality again. Carpinteria experienced some growth during World War II as it became an important munitions production center due to its location at the mouth of the Santa Clara River. During this time, the city built several large factories including Boeing Aircraft Company’s facility which manufactured B-17 Flying Fortress bombers. Additionally,Carpinteria hosted numerous military exercises such as Ranger Beach which simulated battlefield conditions; and El Centro – also known as The Big One – which simulated an enemy invasion
