Carpinteria, California is a small town in central California, United States, located on the mouth of the Arroyo Seco River. The population was 9,818 at the 2010 census. Carpinteria is part of the Mono County Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name Carpinteria comes from "carpa" meaning "a kind of myrtle" and "eria" meaning "place where people live." The first settlers in what is now Carpinteria were Mexicano traders who came to this area in 1847 for trade with Southern California. In 1868, when Oregon became a U.S. state, Carpinteria became part of Mono County and was renamed after Captain John Waddell's shipwreck on October 15 that year off the coast of Santa Barbara County. The first post office opened in 1871 and continued operation until it closed on May 1, 1933. In 1901, president Theodore Roosevelt visited Carpinteria while vacationing in nearby Mono Lake and called it one of his favorite towns because its location made it easy to get around by horse or buggy without getting lost – something that many other towns did not have at that time. Today there are only a few traces left of what once thrived here including an old cotton gin and three blacksmiths' shops which still stand today as nostalgic relics from an earlier era when carpentry was an important skill in this community. What has changed most recently about CarpINTERIA however is its growth as an agricultural center; since 2000, carpentry has slowly become a less common activity but still provides employment for several local families who continue to make beautiful furniture and other home goods.

The history of Carpinteria, California dates back to the mid-19th century. At that time, the area was part of Rancho Santa Fe. In 1847, a group of merchants and entrepreneurs founded the town of Carpinteria on the east side of San Pedro Bay. The town charter was issued in November of that year. By 1865, Carpinteria had become an agricultural center with over 100 businesses. The population grew rapidly during the late 1800s and early 1900s as new settlers arrived from all over Mexico and Central America. In 1915, Carpinteria received its first post office and became a city. In 1920, it incorporated as a county seat for Monterey County. Today, Carpinteria is one of the most vibrant communities in northern California and has many cultural attractions including its own high school football team and multiple theaters/concert venues
Carpinteria was founded in 1887 by George and Mary Carpinteria. The carpentry business started out as a small shop on the corner of Seventh Street and Gloucester Avenue. In 1915, they moved to what is now the northeast corner of Carpinteria Boulevard and Ventura Boulevard. In 1928, they opened their own store, which became one of the most popular in town. Over time, their company grew into a large furniture company with stores all over Southern California. The Carpinterias closed their doors in 1976 but continued to operate their business until 1984 when it officially went bankrupt.
