Carpinteria, California is a small city located in southern Santa Barbara County, California. The population was 10,883 at the 2010 census. Carpinteria's history began with Mission San Miguel Arcángel, founded in 1781 by Franciscans. It continued as a small town until it became an incorporated city on November 3, 1912. The first people to inhabit what is now Carpinteria were the Ohlone Indians. A mission called Misión de Nuestra Señora del Carmen was established in 1823 by Father Pedro Obregon and Father José Crespo. In 1834 the Mexican government granted Rancho Santa Cruz to Fernando Woodbury and his brother Amos woodbury for $5,000. They named their rancho Carpinteria after another of their properties in Monterey County: Carrascalva (now Carrara). In 1878 Juan Bautista Aguirre built the first post office in Carpinteria when he opened the Cerritos Branch of the Southern Pacific Railroad near today's intersection of Main Street and School Road. Aguirre served as mayor from 1889-1892 and 1893-1896; he also owned land that allowed him to build a school and sawmill on what is now School Road. The first store in town was opened by Jens Jensen on Main Street in 1912; it was replaced by a more modern store building several years later when City Hall was constructed on Park Avenue across from School Road. Carpinteria began annexing other townships during World War II because they had military bases nearby: Camp Pendleton (1940), Isla Vista (1945), Point Mugu Naval Air Station (1945), and Otay Mesa Airport (1946). The annexation process accelerated after Japan bombed Pearl Harbor on December 7th, 1941 resulting in vast amounts of firewood being needed for military purposes within minutes of the attack happening. Nearly all surface water supplies were turned off during this time leading to debilitating shortages that continues into present day; however, local businesses managed to find ways to get around these limitations despite having extremely limited resources available outside assistance from central government organizations such as FEMA or Caltrans which conducted large scale cleanups throughout much of coastal California following World War II regardless of jurisdictional boundaries
