The first mayor of Carpinteria was Wm Calkins from 1922-1924 and again from 1934-1936; he served as chairman of the City Council during these years. Other early mayors included: Harry Pritchard (1920-1922), Homer Hirsch (1924), Averell Harriman (1927–29), Lamar Smith (1945–1950), Adolph Sutro (1945–1950). Carpinteria, California is a city in the Mexican state of Baja California. Situated on the edge of the Mojave Desert and at an elevation of over 6,000 feet (1,924 meters), it is one of the most isolated cities in North America. The population was 26,871 as of 2010. Carpinteria was founded on December 17, 1916 by Captain George Fenton and his wife Clara Wolkomir Fenton. It was named after Maria Carpintero from Empalme, Sonora, who had journeyed across the desert to look for a new home for her family following their eviction from their previous home in Ontario. Mrs. Fenton became convinced that she could find a more beautiful location for her family than any within miles of existing settlements and so purchased 7 acres (2 ha) including what would later become the town center from José Elías Romero de la Garza y Rivera on January 3, 1917. Colonel John Hogg donated 5 acres (18 ha) to help with infrastructure costs while still others contributed land or money through various donations during 1918-1921. By 1920 there were over 100 people living in Carpinteria when it incorporated as a Municipality under Juan Ángel Mena y Acosta Presidente Municipal de Baja California Sur
