Carlsbad, California is a large city located in northwest San Diego County, California on the northern coast of the United States. The population was 66,827 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the larger City of San Diego metropolitan area. The first area that was settled in what is now Carlsbad date back to 1846 when prospectors discovered gold and silver deposits in what are today known as northeast Carlsbad and southeast Rancho Peñasquitos. In 1853, James Meehan established the first post office in present-day Carlsbad. By 1870, there were over fifty businesses operating around town which included several mercantile stores including J P Beaumont & Co., John Giannini & Sons, W H Perkins & Son and Rufus Hodge’s Store No 9. In 1886, George A Beard opened his general store at 2nd Street and Lincoln Avenue which became one of the largest businesses in town with a staff totaling forty people. By 1893, Beard had outgrown his business space and moved to 4th Street where he remained until 1918 when he sold all his assets to J C Hardesty for $350,000. In 1915, Carlisle Realty Company was organized with E L Carr as president and W C Weems as secretary/treasurer/administering agent After years of growth led by Carr’s successors (George Sobeys followed him into management), Realty Company merged with other commercial interests to form First National Bank in 1933 The extensive remodeling program undertaken by banker Webb followed soon after allowed First National Plaza (later renamed State Fairgrounds) to become one of America’s most luxurious shopping destinations during its heyday from 1937-1945 inclusive However like so many others associated with this era such as Ivar Nilsen’s Constructions company or Douglas Aircraft Corporation – both having been founded during World War II – First National Bank failed within just a few years following the end of hostilities leaving Carlsdad with only two small stores remaining on 2nd Street before it was razed to make way for Interstate 5 . Today only a parking lot remains between 3rd Street eastward from Imperial Avenue southwesterly across Reseda Boulevard towards Qualcomm Stadium lies undeveloped land once occupied by Second National Bank Building . This remnant from an earlier century can still be seen from Emperor Way northwest corner thereof surrounded by tall grasses typical condition along much older developed neighborhoods adjacent thereto reflecting changing demographics experienced within commuting distance during late 20th century . In 1846, during Mexico's war for independence from Spain, General Antonio López de Santa Anna ordered his soldiers to burn down most of La Mesa (now part of Carlsbad). A few months later he ordered another detachment to destroy all theLocal villages that had not yet submitted to Mexico's new government. On September 20thof that year Carlsbad was burned down by American troops under Lieutenant Colonel John Cushing as retribution for Mexican attacks on Ulysses S Grant's army several weeks earlier near San Pasqual Valley

In 1922, the city hall building was moved from its original location to what is now called Bingham Park.
