On January 24, 1602 Don Diego de Alcalá y Aguilar landed at Point Reyes National Seashore looking for sea otters when he noticed what he thought was an oil well from which he made a discovery but soon realized it was an artificial island created by Mission Santa Cruz de la Vera Cruz when they built their fortification in 1776; his finding marked the start of Spanish exploration west of Baja California City (now Mexico City). In 1853 Captain Carl Gustaf Persson founded what is now Carlsbad with help from his brother-in-law Hjalmar Sohlgren. The original site included only about 25 acres (10 ha)of mud flats where the Persson family lived until they moved to their current location near Anza Borrego Springs in 1875. By 1860 there were 5 businesses located along Third Street between State Route 1010 and Mission Road east of present day Interstate 10: Agrarian Store & Mercantile Depot; Beale’s Bazaar store; Gassnett’s Grocery; Methodist Episcopal Church - First Congregational Society building - new since 1857;Persson’s Dry Goods store started by Captains Swedberg & Lagerfeldt}. In 1865 Captain John Joice led a detachment under Lieutenant Colonel George Cushing around Point Reyes Peninsula during gold discoveries offshore northwest of San Francisco Bay. On October 14th1869 three men from Aberdeen Minerals Company's ship "Enderby" came ashore onshore just south of present day State Route 163 about 20 miles (32 km) east-northeast of Canoga Park after sailing up White Sands Creek from Mexicali Harbor following reports about rich goldfields southeast of Los Angeles County (). They named this area La Mesa de la Plata () after one resources they found ""arsenite feldspathic schistose sandstone."" This event signaled beginning stages throughout much OF California history whereby private companies became responsible for most major mineral exploration within designated areas free from government control (). The first post office opened atCARLSBAD on March 3rd 1870 (). The first school was organized September 11th 1870 by Mrs Mabel Jarvis as Monterey Female Academy but changed name June 1st 1870 to our current nameCARLSBAD High School (). There have been many changes and additions both inside and outside CARLSBAD since then including several annexations such as Rancho Peñasquitos which encompassed part or all south side Of CARLSBAD back when Rancho Peninasquitos extended into today`s North Side CARLSBAD . Most significant however has always been our love for education especially giving back more than we take!
