Carlsbad, California is a city in San Diego County, California, United States. The population was 43,636 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest city in San Diego County after San Diego and the eighth-largest city in California. The City of Carlsbad has a total area of 106 square miles (253 km2), making it smaller than only Encinitas and Imperial Beach combined. The history of Carlsbad goes back to 1847 when two Mormon missionaries named George Carlisle and Lorenzo Snow arrived here from Utah looking for new converts. They founded what would become Carlsbad Springs as a mission station on October 12th, 1847. After serving for two years they departed for their last mission trip on March 9th, 1849. Today we still have evidence that these missionaries were there long before our current town was founded – there are three small hills nearby that may once have been used as an observatory or stable! Today’s downtown areas were established around 1900 when the first post office opened here under the name “Carlsbad” after Captain John Smeaton who had earlier built a trading post at present day Mission Viejo which served both coastal communities and inland missions down to Point Loma (Lomitas) until November 15th, 1853 when Mexican independence was recognized by US authorities and Smeaton’s post was abandoned. In 1903 Mayor A J Fenton dedicated Memorial Park south of town in honor of Private First Class James Wickersham VC who had died during World War I while fighting with distinction on the Western FrontCanadian Expeditionary Force; his body remains interred at Arlington National Cemetery today! On October 10th 1904 voters approved annexation by San Diego but this idea never got off the ground because no one wanted to live next to all those tannery workers! It wasn’t until 1907 that Carlsbad residents finally gathered enough signatures to put annexation up for a vote again with Supervisor Arturo Chavezeu being instrumental in getting it through! Finally on December 1st 1907 cars started flowing into town from Carmel Valley via State Route 66; now called I-5! This influx of people must have been reallyxing up because according to legend early mayors Arturo Chavezeu and Don McMurray did not even bother keeping track of how many cars were coming into town each day since everyone just drove into town where they found parking spaces!) So much for dreams of becoming “The City Of Angels!” In 1918 Gertrude Stein wrote about her visit here: “I walked out over [the] bridges…into what looked like an immense desert extending away behind me beyond anything I could see anywhere else within my knowledge or memory – yet it was not so vast an emptiness as I had imagined it would be […] When you enter Mexico there is something very different inside your own mind before you go home again […] And then you come out upon this incredibly beautiful piece of earth which looks straight down upon everything below its surface without any intervening nothingnesses whatsoever except distances which look like huge oceans if you look hard enough […] There is something very special about this place [...] every time I go back I feel more alive than ever before […] What can one do but love this place?” Carrsbad has always been known for its beaches – including some world-famous ones such as Cabo Rojo National Marine Sanctuary and Isla Vista Naval Air Station – its annual events such as Fiesta del Carmen (a celebration honoring Spanish culture), ASU Open House Weekend (attendance numbers reaching 100% twice!), Padres baseball games against UCLA & USC late summer university tournaments etc., music festivals throughout summertime like Coachella Rave Music Festival & Desert Sun Music Festival etc., artsy neighborhoods such as La Mesa/Palo Alto/Stateline among others (& don't forget Pluralistic Arts District!), delicious restaurants everywhere from high end chain places like Nobu Matsuhisa's Japanese restaurant Hideaki Anno's Taishō Hibachi Grill or Benny Goodman's White Sands Cafe right down to small mom & pop shops doing amazing food justice all year round!, rich wine country setting nearby plus abundant outdoor activities opportunities year round including whale watching / birdwatching / fishing etc., top secret military installations close by including Edwards Air force base – home turf of Operation Neptune Spear!, farming possibilities too including citrus growing &Mission Hills Winery

Carlsbad was a small town in Northern California until the mid-20th century. It is now a ghost town and most of its residents have moved away. The town was founded on October 16, 1887 by Danish immigrants, Ole Hansen and his wife Anna Karenina Ditlevsen. The first store in Carlsbad opened on December 1, 1887. In 1915, the post office closed and all mail was delivered to Redondo Beach. The only businesses remaining in the early 20th century were a bakery and two grocery stores. The first car dealership in Carlsbad was established by Jens Andersen in 1922. By 1928, there were twelve car dealerships operating in the community. The last dealership closed its doors in 1984. The first school in Carlsbad was built on May 10, 1889 by Mrs Aagaardgaard with support from her husband Ole Rasmussen. There were six students attending this school when it opened; however, it closed after one year due to financial difficulties. The first public school open for students in Carlsbad was located at Seventh Street and East Avenue which served as a middle school until 1912 when it became an high school under Instructional District No 3 (later known as Carlsbad Unified School District). In addition to instruction at Seventh Street and East Avenue, local residents also convened monthly meetings at various locations throughout Carlsbad to discuss issues pertaining to education that occurred during their term of office or would be contemplated for future consideration Accordingly, on January 9th of 1912 an actwas passed which provided for the erection of a new public highschool building adjacent to SeventhStreetandEastAvenueonthe southeast cornerofOldTown SquareinCarrdsbid
