Carlsbad is a city in San Diego County, California, United States. The population was 382,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Diego-Tijuana Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit Carlsbad were two Spanish Jesuit missionaries, Father Junípero Serra and Father José de Jesús Gilman on September 14, 1769. Mission Carlsbad began construction in December 1775 and was completed on December 24th of that year. On February 4th of 1846 the Mexican–American War ended with Mexico's capitulation and California's admission as a US state. However, because Mexico still controlled parts of what are now southern California and Nevada (the so-called Alta California), most people in these areas still thought of themselves as Mexican when they became US citizens. This caused much tension until 1850 when President James K Polk signed into law the Compromise Of 1850 which gave all residents full citizenship regardless of their final status under Mexican rule or lack thereof. In 1851 Don Ricardo Torres y Uribe founded the first store in town and within a few years Carlsbad had become an important trading post for goods coming down from Southern California via Baja Peninsula Route 10 and then up the Central Valley to Sacramento through Sonora Pass before finally reaching San Francisco Bay by way of Isthmus OFchduscan Road on October 12th 1852 days after its creation by American Commodore George Rush during his unofficial visit to Mexico City . It wasn't until 1861 when William Durant started marketing flour here from Port Hueneme outside Los Angeles that town caught on as a commercial center due to its strategic location between two major trade routes - one going east to China through Suez Canal while another went west across America via Chihuahua Desert route known today as I-5

The city's initial growth came fromresidential development as well as commercial interests such as warehouses, restaurants,and a printing press for local newspapers. In the 1950s car sales boomed due to Interstate 895 becoming available linking San Diego with Los Angeles; however this highway caused congestion around Carlisle Boulevard which slowed down population growth until the mid-1960s when streetcars replaced buses onto that section of road leading to Carlsbad Cove Regional Park
Carlsbad is a city in Carlsbad County, California, United States. The population was 44,223 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Diego metropolitan area. The history of Carlsbad dates back to 1849 when miners arrived in what is now the town. Mining operations were slow due to the difficulty in accessing coal and other minerals, but began to pick up after a local entrepreneur bought a claim and reopened an old mine. In 1862, General John J. Pershing destroyed portions of the mining camp and towns northeast of present-day Carlsbad because they were suspected of aiding Mexican insurgents against American forces during the American Civil War; this caused many workers to flee or move away from their homes in what is now northwest Carlsbad. In 1870, James Fenton opened a store on corner of Mission Boulevard and State Street in downtown Carlsbad. The store became known as "Fenton's" for many years until it was sold to Halsey Denny in 1886 who renamed it "Denny's". In 1916, Clyde Ewing established Furniture City Outfitters which continues today as one ofCARLSBAD'S most popular retailers with more than $100 million in annual sales In 1923, A & W Restaurants opened its first restaurant west of Interstate 880 at 5th Avenue and Broadway in what would become known as "A&W Place." A&W continued operation until 1986 when it merged with Subway sandwich chain which moved into its original building on 5th Ave., later becoming Home Depot . After Home Depot left town for good (2005), that building served as the current location for PNC Bank . In 2007-2008 PNC Bank built a new headquarters next door (2007) which replaced their older office near where A&W used to stand
