CN Rail also provides service through the station located just north of US-101 on Atlantic Ave., providing transportation between Carlsadodown Valley and Escondido Station (the former junction for both Amtrak's Empire Builder and Caltrain). Today much of what once constituted Carlsbad's commercial sector has been replaced by new housing developments or annexed into other municipalities since then; however a significant portion remains functioning as a vibrant community center with many cultural events taking place year round including art exhibits and music festivals throughout the calendar year outside along I-805 near Santana Row Shopping Center which includes several restaurants specializing in Mexican cuisine as well as a movie theater complex anchored by Regal Cinemas adjacent to Target Department store having multiplexes such as AMC Theatres across four levels with 10 screens total)

It is located on a peninsula between the Pacific Ocean and the Ship Channel. The town began as a small fishing village on the western edge of present-day Carlsbad. Development around 1900 focused on agriculture and shipbuilding, but by 1910 there were only three houses in town. A post office was established in 1912, and growth continued to increase as new businesses attracted settlers. By 1920, there were over 100 people living in Carlsbad; by 1930, it had reached 300. Growth slowed after World War II as technology advanced and more people moved into towns nearer freeway exits. The population peaked at 476 in 1960 before declining gradually until 2000 when it decreased to 352 residents. In recent years, Carlsbad has seen some redevelopment with mixed uses including a hotel/motel complex and several condominium projects. In 2016, Mayor Greg Stanton announced plans for a $120 million community development project that would create 600 jobs over 10 years across multiple sectors including health care, engineering services and manufacturing jobs within one community center district downtown area

In 1821, Carlsbad was named after Carlisle Young, an American soldier who fought during the Mexican-American War. The town gradually grew and became a popular spot for shipbuilding and fishing. On December 12, 1882, Carlsbad was incorporated as a city by proclamation of Governor James Irvine. The city's population reached 5,000 by 1909. By 1920, Carlsbad had become one of California's most affluent communities. During World War II, the city played an important role in munitions production and post-war reconstruction. In 1957, Carlsbad became home to its first high school when San Diego State University moved from Torrey Pines High School to downtown Carlsbad. It has since remained one of California's largest community colleges with over 60 campuses statewide
